I am going to hard prune these DR. I have two. #1 is this one.

I got what I thought was one plant at Wal-mart. Surprise!!! Got two.
I took them outside the leaves were sort of yellow and I know when outside they usually do better.
#1 has an interesting shape front and back....

#2 is rather plain (to me) except I discovered a hole in it. I enlarged the hole and dug out the Black that was inside it...
This is other side. after i cleaned them up and rinsed off all soil, I got them hanging up in my little potting shed.
What would you do????

# 1 dig out the rot in the caudex and let heal

#2 from what i see the branches some where trimmed one time and grew 1 tall stalk. si might happen again. if it where mine id gut back but leave 3-4 places there where leaves in hope that it might bush some. like them both!!

Good Job Charleen I agree with what Mike had to say except I wouldn't bother planting the cut branches, I've done that twenty or thirty times, it's very easy and I ended up getting rid of all of them since I am interested in the caudex more then the flower and the cutting just don't get one unless you work hard at it lifting and replanting blah blah blah etc. Much more fun to plant and grow from seeds ( I think!)

I have planted them and decided they were no fun at all for the work you put into them.

i have planted then and in 1-2 yrs sold them on ebay for $12-$15 to be able to buy more interesting plants.to buy here 90% walmart/home depot "dessert roses have no caudex there all stem growing seems like most people here are interested in flowers or have no idea what these plants are all about this way i also have plants i can play and get grafting down. if they die no big deal. just my option i plant about 50% of what i cut now but when i do my big cut this winter i dont know what ill do??

Just don't leave them out in rain. I believe it is Early Spring when they have Monsoon. they will help you. I love that site.

Our monsoon is coming up quickly. I've been wanting to cut another of m adeniums, guess I should do it now.

darn just had a big storm and we lost power for 2 hrs. I finally got my hurricane generator i bought 6 -8 yrs ago and NEVER started it so i put oil and gas in it ....started 2 pull!!!! then our power came on before we could stretch out the power cord!!! at least i know it works if i ever need it. After 3 yrs of bad storms and going 3 days no power i broke down a got one and no storms sense that!!


i would wait for a few days till i hear back from the guys about us cutting now!!! or make sure you let the cuts seal before it rains on them.

here is his answer about pruning.....


If I want to prune my adenium or if necessary to prune my adenium I will prune always two months before monsoon. This is ideal for my climate.

For Florida I think it is better to prune your adenium three months before monsoon.
Never repot or prune your adenium during or just before monsoon.
Minimize your fertilizer application or do not apply fertilizer, from two months before monsoon and that makes your plant harder and ready to face the monsoon weather.
As you said your media is well drained one the cause of tip and stem rots are because of continuous rain of the monsoon. Apply or drench the pots once in 15 days with copper oxychloride fungicide or equvalant to this fungicide available there.

so no pruning for me now time to look for this chemical

Guess I will never prune we don't have monsoons, in fact we are 11" short on our rain.

Mike, I just now came in after digging up 4 of mine and putting them in pots to go on my porch! Not only that, but yesterday I beheaded two and grafted them. All of these are now on my porch and fairly well protected so maybe I'll be OK. I'm laughing because if I had gotten you info one day earlier I would have waited. Oh, by the way, if anyone has seen that advertisment for flex steel know that it's exactly the same as the stuff you'd spray on cuttings to help a plant heal. The can even says it can be used for leaks and it's 1/3 the cost of flex steel.

Charleen, Adeniums are sensitive to up and down, please put that upside down guy right side up. He's getting a headache!

Got it right now. It is one that has the hole in it too. Wonder how long I should leave it????

I just potted up some small plants, sent to me in February.... DRs can hang for a long long time. Humidity does play a part, dryer, less time hanging.

I think I read that the growers in Thailand, where it's generally quite humid, hang their plants for two to three months before a show, to make them bloom profusely. I had a plant that went right on growing while it was hanging. And those two huge buggars that I dug from my friend's yard? They are still soilless, in the pots that I used to bring them home in. I keep changing my mind as to what I want to do with them. One is still blooming and has set three seed pods like that! hahahaha, and Two photos of the same plant, note water bottle on the ground for size. Neither plant had a big caudex, but LOTS of feeder roots.
