My hibiscus looks dead as a doornail. The stalks from last year are 3 to 4 feet high. I know you're supposed to be patient, but should I cut down the stalks in the meantime?

Definitely cut them back and perhaps in a few weeks you will see new green sprouts. Mine started sprouting a couple of weeks ago.
