Hi All

Many of the lower branches in this tree are dead. I'd like to read up on it before I start cutting. There are also many places of odd growth (circled in pic). Not sure if this is disease?

Anyone know what type tree?

Charlie,

I am not an arborist, but I believe the tree you have there is a variety of Crabapple. Many older varieties are prone to a variety of diseases. The black 'galls' look like Black Knot disease, but I suspect that it may have scab and fire blight as well. If it were me, I would remove the tree entirely, burning as much of it as possible to kill the pathogens and I would definitely NOT replant any type of plant that is prone to any of those diseases.

I think it may be Prunus cerasifera 'Thundercloud' or Prunus x 'Blireana'. This poor tree is so overgrown and shapeless.. Even if you conquered the disease problem, it would be a steep uphill climb to get it to look reasonable. I'd replace it. Put your energy to better use.
