I don't see a June thread yet, so I will start one!

I have a couple of seedlings that are currently blooming. Both of these are siblings. Both of these I started a thread about: The thread "What do you think my CHILD will look like?" in Daylilies forum last year.

TTT26: CCC05 (Laughing Clown x Zanti Misfit) x Little Jet Setter. 3" blooms. First Sibling:

TTT28: CCC05 (Laughing Clown x Zanti Misfit) x Little Jet Setter. 5" blooms. Second Sibling:
Bloom 1:
Thumb of 2019-06-01/beckygardener/5516ad
Bloom 2:
Thumb of 2019-06-01/beckygardener/101c8c

Both of these have beautiful, rust-free clumps! (They developed clumps last year, which still amazes me because so few of my seedlings have done that except one I've had for a long time.) And both have a number of scapes with buds. Bud count is not as high as I would like, but they make up for that by producing a lot of scapes. Last year they rebloomed as well.

I love both of these because of what I consider to be many good traits such as the bloom colors, their size, bloom shape, and clump habits.

Valerie - Thank you. Yes! The majority of my seedlings that have survived are the rust-free ones. The summers here are brutally hot and the rusty plants are weakened and often don't survive but a year or two. So there is something to be said for healthy leaves! Those that survive seem to thrive after a few years. But these sibling jumped into overdrive their very first year!

These clumps are something that I rarely experience here. There is something in the gene pool that makes them grow quickly into beautiful clumps. They are evergreen. They became clumps within a year. I don't use anything particular on them either, just sprinkle a little slow-release fertilizer around them is what I do to ALL my plants. But these siblings just took off from the very start! I have 3 siblings and they all have these beautiful clumps!

I am as interested in nice foliage as I am attractive blooms. That quality in seedlings seems to be very hard for me to achieve. I almost feel like I have to have daylilies that "might" grow too quickly into very large clumps somewhere else. There is at least 10 fans in each clump (probably more).

That is a beautiful clump, and I agree, attractive foliage is very important, especially when using daylilies in perennial borders. I love the twist on the petals and sepals of that one. It is really neat Thumbs up

I am having the same problem as Fred, these are just some of the clips and beads I pulled as I was pollinating in the garden this morning, these beads each represent a pollination that did not set a pod. I had already emptied my pocket earlier.
The purple beads represent 'Planet Claire', last year I was never able to set a pod on it, but did have some luck with the pollen, this year not a single pod has set using the pollen from 'Planet Claire'.

The seedling bed does add a lot of color and brightens up the garden, but I have seen nothing except some of the tall red ones like in photo #3 ,several look very similar, that are possible keepers. They are all tall with stout scapes and nice dark green foliage. Too bad it does not have a more distinct bloom, but it is pretty, and as you can see I actually do have at least one pod on it.

Already June and so few blooms here. Looks like we will be in the heat of summer when we have the blooms we want to use for crossing.
Sometimes you can set seeds today on tomorrows blooms, if you have any that you can expose the pistil before the bloom opens. I have lots of success pollinating at night when daytime temps are quickly into the 90's and triple digits.

A couple of seedlings today.

Daniel, I do something similar with pollen- except I just use Q-tips cut into half. They fit nicely into my little tubes and I don't have to mess around with a paintbrush or anything. Do you just turn the tube over and rub the pollen onto the bloom?

Larry, there's a lot to like in that bunch. Really like the melon self and the pink bi-tone, and the bright red one is eyecatching...

Kid, I really the second one. Stargate Portal is a newer one for me- hoping to use it more this year...

I grab the stigma and dip it in the tube. From one good tube you can do about 15 or so crosses.

The flower is about 5.5". Ashton has a few of these Aztec Headdress seedlings that are nice flowers. They change with the weather and bloom season. They are pretty flowers but the pattern will vary.

[quote] ShakespearesGarden' "Stargate Portal is a newer one for me- hoping to use it more this year".

Diana, I lost Stargate Portal last fall or over winter. I had grown it since 2013. It has been a favorite parent in my diploid hybridizing. I have several seedlings from Stargate Portal and Stargate Portal kids that I am evaluating and using for crossing. I need to get it again since I still have some I would like to cross with it. For now I will use the SgP kids.

Planet Claire is nocturnal and Curt's Tet. Siloam Medallion line is known to be difficult pod setters T.SM is parent to Supreme Empire, parent of Planet Claire. The buds on Planet Claire start to open in the late afternoon/evening for me and the pollen would be useless the next morning because of moisture/dew. Have you tried bringing a bud inside to open? This is the way I get around a moisture problem with nocturnal sdlgs.

Thanks Shirlee, Im not a huge dip fan and have been focusing on my tets this year. I haven't done a single dip cross and only took a few photos of my dips but here are a few dip pics I did take this year for the dip fans out there.

I had a lot of Waves of Joy fails along with Facemaker, Seminole stitchery, and violet spring but I've made maybe 300 some odd crosses so far and peak bloom is still about 2 weeks away. The heat is affecting everyone this year, hopefully we can get a few overcast days in June. All of May was mid and upper 90's with very little rain.
