My fuchsia is making me really confused. I got it from a garden centre about 2 weeks ago, and I was drawn to its unusual colours. The petals were a cool purple and the sepal a yellowish white. The plant itself was very small, with much smaller blooms than what I remember from my grandparents' more shrub-like fuchsias back in the days. I guess the shape is called a standard - it has been grown to look a bit like a tiny tree. After giving it a bigger pot, which it shares with some herbs, it started sulking a bit, dropping almost all the new buds. I've been keeping the soil moist and the pot is placed in partial shade, but since the foilage looks healthy, I haven't given up on it yet.

But yesterday, I realised something: first of all, there are a bunch of new leaves (shooting out from the stem, just below the crown) that look nothing like the old ones. They are 10 x bigger, with a brighter colour. Furthermore, the few remaining flowers (not sure if they've matured after I got the plant or if they're the last ones standing from before I got it) have changed colour. The petals are lighter and the sepal is now a soft pink. I'm just sitting here scratching my head. My grandparents kept their fuchsia alive for several season (it overwintered inside) on their patio, and it didn't fade in the sunshine. And what's going on with the huge leaves?

I would be so happy if anyone could give me some answers, as I find myself unable to locate any useful information on google (it could just be me being inept), and if you have any advice on how I'm supposed to make the plant happy, I'm all ears.

The plant is standing in a 9 in planter (it came in a 5 or 6 in one). I keep the soil moist, and I've mixed perlite and vermiculite into the compost, and added both bonemeal and a slow release fertiliser to it.

When fuchsias are grown as standards, the grafting technique is the same as for roses and some other plants sold as "trees." The top is grafted onto a different fuchsia with a strong trunk. Your new leaves belong to that fuchsia. Just pull them off when they start growing. As for the color, I would guess that the light and sun exposure in the garden center were different from the light and sun exposure the plant receives now.
