In fairness to 'Purple Starfish', my evaluation will be based on the fact that it grows in almost full shade in my sitting garden. I have others that do okay in the shade in the sitting garden, but I thing PS needs more sun to reach it's full potential.
2019 has brought record rainfall here in southwestern Indiana (about 32" between January 1 and June 21), which has created a lot of bud drop, wilted scapes, and stunted growth.
For me, the blooms are simply gorgeous on about a 24" scape (registered at 35"). The most buds I have had was 8 (registered at 25 buds), and 2-way branching (registered at 5-way).
This scape is from yesterday.
Here is PS stuck in between 'Early Fragrance' on the left and 'Corryton Pink' on the right. 'Corryton Pink' is registered at 32", so you can see that it would be taller also if it received more sun. 'Early Fragrance' is registered at 22", so it is about the size that it should be. I believe my camera settings are different, because it looks more red here than in person.
The following two pictures were taken in 2017.
I just looked up 'Purple Starfish' on the ADS database and was surprised that the picture there did not look like any of the pictures in the NGA database. I may have to try to contact someone to see if that is an error in the database or what is going on with that
