Ken - I can't believe how big and beautiful your Scepter'd Isle is!! Mine (in a pot) is abou a foot tall. I've repotted it into a different medium. Hopefully that will help...it was a bareroot last year. I can't believe how glorious yours is!!

Not having a real winter makes quite a difference. Good and bad.

Ken - around 6 months ago you posted a few photos of your rose beds when they were fairly new and dormant. They showed how the beds were set out so you could walk around them and see the plants from all sides. Could you take another set of photos from the same places so we can see the difference now, like a before and after thing? It is something I have been looking forward to because I love the way your garden is set out. I hope I'm not asking too much of you as I know you haven't been well.

I like fll bush shots too! I just have to remind myself that mine aren't going to look quite as "full" as they do in warm climates, lol! '

I don't know where to begin in this thread! Thank you Ken for your pic of Scepter'd Isle. I just planted mine and think I placed it well judging from your gorgeous pic. I'm fascinated by Brinessa also as it has a very graceful habit. That is one that doesn't get mentioned often.
MGKing, I really wish I could have visited your garden when I was in OK. It's MUCH more beautiful with so many more roses than any of the poor RRD ravaged public gardens that I visited. : (( I'd love to hear how you are growing your Aloha ie. as a climber or a bush?, as well as growing info on BD and ZD. Does the latter repeat much for your?
Jeri, my only consolation when looking at your roses which are better that any public garden I've ever visited, is that you have a very long growing season with little BS pressure. Otherwise, I'd have to have a deep think about what I'm doing over here. :)) It's very hard to pick a favourite as you highlight my favourite intire class.... climbers! (Or maybe it's just that any rose will climb in your climate if given half a chance!)
Seil, I don't have the above excuse with your roses. I never thought Disneyland could be grown around here and look like anything. Loving the BB standard, Verdun, Blanc de Neige (looks like Yvonne Rabier-does it ball?), Honorine de Brabant and Winter Sunset! Heck! I like them all? What atomic concoction are you feeding those things! Do you spray for BS?

Vaporvac, thank you. Probably a few weeks before you were in Oklahoma I would have been glad for you to see my roses, but after all the rain we had some of them were a disaster. Blackspot was really bad after that, but has subsided somewhat. I have truly been trying to get my rose beds in the kind of condition that I wouldn't be embarrassed for anyone to see them, that's how they should always be! I think I finally found a couple of young boys who are going to help me accomplish that. I do try to keep my front yard beds presentable. I've been behind on deadheading and got some of that accomplished this morning.
My ZD has been blooming continually since spring, although not that many at once. My established one has gotten so huge, I am thinking about doing away with it. I planted another one and hopefully I can keep it at a much more manageable size! BD is usually a good repeat bloomer here, it had two flushes already, so hopefully it will be blooming again soon. BD is a good rose here and reasonably disease resistant. I grow Aloha as a Climber, but it does need some attention at this time. Hopefully by next spring it will look much better than it does right now. It did have a long bloom season, and it usually gives me blooms in late summer until frost.

GoldBeard - how can you have such gorgeous roses!! Amazing!!!! I'm really struck by your wonderful Pink Peace, August Renoir (I should have gotten that rose this year!), MEC, and Beverly!! Zounds!!!

Thanks, vaporvac! They only look that good once in a blue moon so I grab pics while I can. As for Disneyland, I lost it to winter so it really isn't a cold climate rose.

DING! DING! DING! A special note on Scepter d' Isle. It is grafted onto fortuniana root stock. The root stock makes all the difference with this rose. Carol--- Since you grow all your roses in large pots and over winter them in a garage, fortuniana root stock roses should survive and thrive for you. Mine has been in the ground since I moved here (2008) and we have seen MANY nights where it has been below 0. Teens are a common thing every winter.
Vaporvac---Brinessa is one tough rose. I've been growing it since 1990. A good friend gave it to me. He wasn't big on pink roses, so I ended up with it. It turned out to one of my very favorite roses. My 2 current bush's are 11 yrs old, so I will be sending bud wood to K&M this fall for more next year.

Ken - it would be a miracle if I could find a rose on fort rootstock here. Believe me, I've thought about it often. I can only dream.

Bought this place in the fall of '16. There was nothing here but the 1840's territorial home which had been long neglected, a few giant 80' elms, & elders, a good sized black walnut, and a perimeter overgrown with "volunteer" trees that grew in the old fence line. The yard was basically 4' tall weeds and huge black willow suckers coming up from the roots of a monstrous old stump. I'm still trying to get rid of poison ivy here! Just trying to emphasize what can be done in only a couple seasons. I like rugosas because they do well in our wind whipped, & extreme Midwestern climates. The first photo is a 2 year old (believe it or not) rugosa, "Therese Bugnet", which was a bagged plant purchased at Menards in 2017. I believe it's hardy to zone 3. I've never had a rose grow so fast in this region, and we've even been in drought the last 2 years. Springs rains this year were torrential, and now that they've stopped, I'm seeing rapid growth in everything. Will be interesting seeing how large this rose will get. Read reviews by some who don't like this cultivar. Why! It can't be beat for Northern gardens if you want a large, fragrant, spring bloomer. It's presently in a reduced rebloom right now, but Japanese beetles are here midsummer, and just love the rugosas. They eat the flowers, but don't seem to do permanent damage. I highly recommend this rose if you want a large shrub variety up north. I planted another "Bugnet" nearby this one to create a windbreak for my lily beds & more sensitive roses downhill. The second photo is a highly fragrant 2 year old Rosa De Rescht, and the 3rd, my 2 year old Rosa Mundi, a candy striped sport of the apothecary rose, Gallica Officinalis, my all time favorite.

@Number9Dreamer Just only yesterday I was carefully looking into my T.Bugnet if it had any hips from which to collect seeds... none. However I did get seeds of Rose du Rescht as well as of Rosamundi. Each of a different rose class but all three are absolutely wonderful roses. Of all, I hope to find worthy descendants. They are very worthy well shaped bushes. T. B has very striking fall colours. These very hardy old garden roses are still going to give us pleasant surprises...
