I had this so bad in my St Augustine yard. It would form big mats and just cover the grass. I don't like chemicals, but had to do something. Tried Roundup, and it didn't affect the buttonweed. Found some stuff called Celsius [$$]. It works great. Kills it without killing the surrounding grass. I keep a spray bottle on the front porch and give a quick spray whenever I see some.
