Nyx - Oh, that's a wonderful picture of Chihuly!! Tax paid in full!

Maybe you should start by looking at the roses offered by rose vendors near you. We could have a look at that vendor's roses and let you know which ones are unique.

Nyx - yes, we all tend to do that too....but there are soooo many roses...and to tell you to try to find one out of the hundreds of thousands seems to me to be unrealistic. Blinking Big Grin So my thoughts are to give us a list, and we can tell you which roses are unique and which ones are fabulous! Or if you just want to browze...you could try looking at https://www.helpmefind.com/ros...

I just wanted to know if anyone knew of any they had or have seen and knew the name. Unique roses such as Koko Loko or the wingthorn rose.

There is a post on this very subject over at the Rose Form on Garden Web. You might want to take a look at it as there are tons of unique roses or not often seen roses that might pique your interest.

Thank you Canadian and thank you for the thread recommendation Vapor! I spotted a few beauties in that thread and now I'm definitely interested in picking up a Green Romantica I saw posted there!

That was a beauty, wasn't it? I really like all the Romanticas. You should be able to grow quite a few in your zone. Another I love is the Massad Rose, Rosomane Janon, but I don't know from where you could get one. Jerabek's Peggy M is one of my favourites and is hardy, as well.

The unique name of a rose is what is often called the "breeder's code name". This is the name under which roses are patented or registered for Breeders Rights and is used in international treaties. The code name stays the same no matter what country the rose is sold in anywhere in the world.

The "fancy name" is what you would call the marketing name. This is how roses get multiple names. Some rose names would be quite off-putting in some countries, so the rose is given a different "fancy name".

An excellent example is the rose marketed as 'Julia Child' in the US. The same rose is sold as 'Absolutely Fabulous' in Europe. It also has a few other fancy names. The breeder's code name is 'WEKvossutono'.

Here is a link to JC in our database showing all three of the rose names I mentioned above:

Oh I understand what a patent name is for a rose, thank you for the wonderful explanation though, I just wanted to know of visually unique roses that people may know of, such as something with variegated foliage or an uncommon color like Green Romantica that Vapor helped point out! Lovey dubby

Oh, I misunderstood you, Nyx.

I often think of every rose I grow as unique, because roses look different in different growing conditions.

'Green Romantica' would fry and be an ugly failure in my garden. On the other hand Ralph Moore's rose 'Green Ice' is a champion and can handle the heat and the cold.

Rose (Rosa 'Green Ice')

The blooms change to pink when the temps drop

Then there is 'Pink Poodle'

Rose (Rosa 'Pink Poodle')

'Si' is supposed to be the smallest rose in the world, but I think Paul Barden has bred a rose almost as small called 'Qui'

Rose (Rosa 'Si')

I live singles and one of my favorites is 'Grace Seward'

The salmon colored stamens look incredible to my eye

Rose (Rosa 'Grace Seward')

These happen to be miniatures, but there are so many unique roses, it would be impossible for me to list them all.

Roseblush, I love those roses. I've want PP and GI for a while. When my main beds are finally planted, I'll see what space I have left for these charmers. One Moore rose that especially unique is Wedding Cake. I'm growing up a couple and can't wait to see a bloom. I wonder if anyone has grown it in my zone.

Variegated foliage: rose mosaic comes to mind! Some of my roses have it, but it doesn't seem to otherwise affect the health, and vigor of the bush, such as with my Chrysler Imperial and a couple of others!

Rugosa roses have crinkly leaves that are interesting.

Yup ... there are folks growing Wedding Cake in your zone. There are several gardens listed on HMF that show WC grown in zone 6 and even 5.

Green Ice is available from Burlington and Pink Poodle is listed as available from For Love of Roses.

GI does not mind being pruned to a smaller size than my plant and will still provide prolific bloom.

PP is a tall narrow plant and can be slipped in almost anywhere.

Nyx, if you want to see lots of unique roses, all you have to do is to follow the daily rose thread at the beginning of the threads for this rose forum, and I guarantee, you will see lots of unique roses by longtime members! You could even go back and start with April's thread. In one of the posts this spring, zuzu the moderator posted a link to all her roses, and there are many unique ones with unusual coloring.

Lynn, you are a bad enabler.... I love roses that I can shoe horn in somewhere! I've wanted GI since my first order with Burling... I don't know why I still don't have it. I think next spring will be when I order all the stragglers I've yet to pull the trigger on. Too bad she doesn't have PP as well. I hope to get some of the 7 dwarfs, Anda and Maroon 8. We'll see what else pops in basket. Her prices and shipping set up are so reasonable and she has so many unusual ones.

Hi Vap ....

I do like enabling ... Big Grin

You might want to contact Berling by email or phone to check and see if she has a few 'Pink Poodle' plants on the bench. She may not have enough to list them in inventory for sale, but you never know what's on the bench ... Whistling

A couple more of Ralph's roses you might want to add are 'Splish Splash' ...

I never could catch the soft gold reverse with my old camera ...

Rose (Rosa 'Splish Splash')

and 'Sequoia Gold'

Rose (Rosa 'Sequoia Gold')

Both roses in these photos are about 15 years old and every year they are covered in blooms almost all of the time. The repeat is fast. They are clean in my low humidity garden, but most roses are. I don't have many problems with rose diseases ... I get bugs ... Smiling
