Just stumbled on this plant yesterday at Walmart and just had to buy it to add to my semi-outdoor atrium. I think it's just lovely and can't wait for it to start cascading down. What do you think? Any tips of advice on this particular fern?

Your Lemon Button Fern (Nephrolepis cordifolia 'Duffii') is gorgeous! They do require bright shade to very filtered sun. Unfortunately, I've never been able to keep one alive for very long so I can't offer advice on how to keep one happy. *Blush*

I have a tiny one. It's a drama queen for sure. Needs a lot of humidity. It's in my kitchen window and gets lots of warm showers. The fronds on mine are very tender and break easily. Good luck with yours.

It prfers cool temps and constantly damp soil. It is pretty hard to over water but will develop dry brown fonds in a hurry if allowed to get the least bit too dry.

Thank you all for your comments. I think I'll move it over to the ceiling hanger on the shadier side of the atrium then @plantladylin. Then the sun will never hit those delicate fronds. The hook I put it on does get an hour or so of very late evening sun, as you can see in the photo (taken at 6:30pm). I'll be watering it daily then, @Willc. It's in a real small 8" pot, and someone on my other Texas Gardenweb forum recommended perhaps re-potting to a 10" pot would help it along.

Your Fern appears to be healthy and growing well, so it may be ready for a 10" pot.

You probably know all this, but just in case, here are my rules for repotting:

1. Move them up one size only to a pot with drain holes.

2. Loosen the outer roots of the rootball just a bit. Sometimes a fork helps. Otherwise, disturb the roots as little as possible and don't remove any soil.

3. Use a soilless peat-based potting mix that has only peat moss, coir, and perlite as ingredients. You can easily mix your own using 4 parts of peat and 1 part of perlite.

4. Put some potting mix in the bottom of the larger pot, set the rootball on top of that and fill in the sides with potting mix. Do NOT add any potting mix to the TOP of the original rootball.

5. Water thoroughly and add more potting mix if some of it sinks in around the sides.

6. You will have to adjust your watering after repotting as the added soil will not dry out as quickly as it does now.

Hold on, Did Will just recommend repotting???? @Peggy8b You should win a prize, because he is dedicated to teaching us not to repot so often, to the point I don't think I have ever seen him advise to do so before. I would follow his tips to the letter. He knows what he's doing.

I have nothing to offer, Just had to give @WillC a little trouble this morning. Lovely little plant.

You're funny, Laurie and very close to the truth! Hilarious! Very out of character but, but I am not a rigid ideologue.

I have on a few occasions recommended repotting when a plant is clearly potbound, in a good growing environment, and the person is likely to know how to repot correctly. It seems to occur far less frequently than people realize. It always amazes how many different plant problems folks think can be resolved by repotting - pest problems, overwatering, leaf yellwoing, overgrown plants, etc.

I also find it interesting how few people ever ask HOW to repot, assuming they know how. But everyone seems to have their own idea about how it should be done.

Now, see what a can of worms you have opened, Laurie! Whistling
