Does anyone have any other way of controlling stilt grass other than spraying? We have a huge problem with it in this area. Its taking over everything. I've been fighting it ever since we moved to this house but I didn't know what it really was until I read Ken Druse's book "The Natural Shade Garden" where he talks about its invasive tendencies. Anyway, does anyone have a handle on this menace?

Yes, stilt grass can run rampant around here. We try to hand pull stilt grass as early as possible. It pulls quite easily compared to some other weeds.
It's an annual weed so needs to be pulled before it sets seed in late summer.
My daughter had tons of stilt weed in her garden beds and a couple weeks ago, she, my hubby and I got out and yanked as much as we could. Even though it pulls easy, it's a huge job when it's a large patch.
When the world wearies and society ceases to satisfy, there is always the GARDEN

Yeah, it covers the whole yard. Problem is no one is controlling theirs an we are right up to the common area that is full of it. It wasn't so bad when we moved in here but it has gone crazy over the last two years.

I used Preen early in the spring and that worked.. Sprayed some and it came back.
And I agree it is everywhere... Starting to go to seed here in Pa.

Hand pulling here, too. Major project about this time of year as the stilt grass starts to overtake all areas and look less and less like a lovely uniform border filler plant (In my mind I'm imagining Japanese Forest Grass....) and more uniformly covering everything,

I think I have gotten mine before seed form but those seed heads are fast and hard to notice. Best to clear a neighborhood not just one yard.
Believe I introduced stilt grass to my area in a potted up Plant Swap Plant!!!

I realized I have it this year. I have one discrete area that I hand pulled, trying to maintain a mulched area so I have to get more mulch down there. Mine may have come from salvaged wood chips we found at a nearby empty lot.
Plant it and they will come.

I agree It's everywhere and a real PITA. The only thing is it's easy to pull before it seeds. Crabgrass inhibitors applied in spring, Preen, or corn gluten all should inhibit germination if applied about when Forsythia blooms. Smiling
