I just want to be sure before I continue - this is the first time I've ever paid more than a few bucks for an iris and it makes me nervous! lol. The soil looks wet because I watered it about 40 minutes ago, but based on my other beds like this it will be bone dry tomorrow, and the top inch or two will be dry by tonight. Since it's in the shade (90 degrees in the full sun according to my phone - I didn't realize it was that hot!) I'm hoping it's ok to plant in the heat? Or should I wait until the bed is nearly dry? I've got to start getting my iris in the ground based on my average frost date...Anyhow, they are sitting mostly on the surface since there isn't much to them - but should the little rhizome that there is be any deeper? They are only 12' - 18" apart because these are temporary beds until next year. Thanks!

Looks pretty good to me ! Just keep an eye on them, to be sure they don't "change position" as the soil settles. I like to have them look like "a duck on the water"....bottom of the rhizome below soil level, and the top of the rhizome above soil level.

huh. Well I have a bunch of iris laying on the ground with their name tags loose underneath them - and a thunderstorm blew up. First rain we've had in weeks. I hope the tags don't get blown away! Next year will really be a guessing game if so. I was in the chicken coop and a big bolt of lightning flashed close by, exciting!

I was able to go out and plant a few more - a total of 25 - and your ducks in the water comment reminded me to elevate them in small mounds for better drainage. Thanks! I keep an eye on them as I'm sure they'll settle some.

If you're worried about losing the name tags you could make a map of the bed. In fact it's very advisable. Thumbs up

I planned to, but the thunderstorm came up in the blink of an eye. I was able to get out later and plant more - tomorrow I'll make a map after work!

I was skimming this and I'm not wearing my glasses. Plus I'm using my phone to just flip by. So anyway, I did a double take because I thought the quote was about being behind in 'napping', which applies to me.

As a matter of fact, I do need to update my maps, too, to account for the losses and the ones that I dug up to share. I am almost finished, as I started to update before I sprained my ankle. I have to stay indoors for a while and try to rest my ankle more instead of trying to strain it too much while it is healing. The 2 walks up to the garden were probably too soon. It is a long uphill walk, and the ground is uneven.

I did complete my inventory of the pot ghetto and rearrange it alphabetically, so I could easily find everything. The next garden chore won't be a difficult one, but it will probably be the first one one my list.

I am going to pot up the seedlings from 4" pots, to one gallon pots. As soon as my walking gets better. Crossing Fingers!

Thanks. Sorry to just drop in on y'all like that.

But while I'm here, earlier in this thread I got the impression that irises like shade. I thought they liked sun. ??

They do like sun, a minimum six hours of full sunlight, the more the better.

That was on me - I planted them in an area that gets late afternoon shade, like after 5pm in the summer. It was late when I posted it and they were in the (very bright) shade of my neighbor's stockade fence at the time.

Cindy: That is how I plant but I did notice maybe a root sticking out or who knows, maybe it is an increase. But I make sure all the roots are underground. It is very hot where I live though so healthy roots and lots of them are inportant.

Thanks - I'll admit I wasn't being too careful about the roots, just using them to anchor the plants mostly. I was under the impression that the roots were going to die back anyhow and new roots would take their place?
