Reading the Sept/Oct issue of Garden Gate magazine section called Statement Plants and listed is the Medinilla magnifica. It is so very lovely and unique.

Anyone currently growing it? Where did you get it?
Doesn't seem like many plants available for sale.

Logees sends tiny plants and their shipping is high but the plants are generally of good quality. https://www.logees.com/

I never see Medinilla for sale anymore either. I once had Chandelier Tree (Medinilla cumingii) but planted it at our old house and never took cuttings before we sold the house. Sad

Top Tropicals is selling Pink Lantern (Medinilla magnifica) (1gal size pot) for $42.00: https://toptropicals.com/catal...

I have grown 4 species of Medinilla in the past and none of them liked me. Magnifica probably liked me the least. Some people grow these without problem, but I gave them my best efforts and they fell flat. Although they are sold as container plants, they are actually epiphytic plants. They can be grown like a bromeliad, orchid, or other epiphyte mounted into the crotch of a tree. But it has to be a fairly large tree because these do not stay small. But they are stunning grown this way with the scapes of blooms hanging down. I think if they are grown in a soil mix that is really open and chunky and free draining like the mix I use for all my aroids they might do well. I know some people who grow them in almost straight perlite amended only slightly with peat and soil less potting mix. But if the soil is too heavy and stays too wet around the roots they do not like that. My local independent nursery has had them all summer, and I have seen them at Lowes and Home Depot this summer.

My ACE has them all the time these days. WIsh you were closer Betsy, they are too large to ship.

I had one outside in a container for two years in SC but a cold damp winter took it. Never thought about a looser soil mix, that might have helped.

I just bought one of these today at home Depot on Merritt island. It had no name on it. I believe it's the 'grapes' variety though because it only has the little balls about to bloom none of the pink petals around the cluster that some of them show. If I get a chance in the morning I'll edit the post with a picture.
My tablet takes terrible pictures. They haven't popped open yet so I'm just guessing about this. Of course it was lables assorted tropical....

I've browsed the Excelsa website numerous times but they only sell wholesale. Sad

Perhaps they only ship wholesale orders but they are open to walk ins. A friend who went there recently is still glowing from the experience. A retail nursery set out like a botanical garden, he said it was just fabulous. They freely shared some propagation secrets with him too.

Yes, their website is apparently wholesale only. I've never been there but I bet it's wonderful if it's set up like a botanical gardens ... those are the best types of nurseries!!!

Its pretty fabulous. They used to take you out in a golf cart to see the different varieties of heliconias and stuff planted in the ground in huge stands. I don't know if they still do that. They will either dig for you, of, they have some varieties already potted up and (in some cases) blooming in containers.
