I have grown 4 species of Medinilla in the past and none of them liked me. Magnifica probably liked me the least. Some people grow these without problem, but I gave them my best efforts and they fell flat. Although they are sold as container plants, they are actually epiphytic plants. They can be grown like a bromeliad, orchid, or other epiphyte mounted into the crotch of a tree. But it has to be a fairly large tree because these do not stay small. But they are stunning grown this way with the scapes of blooms hanging down. I think if they are grown in a soil mix that is really open and chunky and free draining like the mix I use for all my aroids they might do well. I know some people who grow them in almost straight perlite amended only slightly with peat and soil less potting mix. But if the soil is too heavy and stays too wet around the roots they do not like that. My local independent nursery has had them all summer, and I have seen them at Lowes and Home Depot this summer.
