About once every two months I sit a wee juice glass half full of bleach in the upper tray of the dishwasher ...facing up.... and at the same time I wash the two filters in the bottom "floor" of the compartment .... only thing, where I did not look was the area right along the hinged area where the washer door attaches to the box ... it was disgusting... I just assumed my bleach wash and every other wash would reach that area. My mistake. I wash all dishes by hand ..but the hubby uses the dish washer.. I should have been checking. Heads up!

Rosie, I do not clean the dishwasher, I figure it keeps cleaning itself, except the filters, those I clean on a regular basis. I always wash around the door frame and check for grime, mostly I load the dishes so am careful about making a mess on the gaskets. Big Grin

This is pretty much what I do. Except I've only cleaned the filter once since installing it last Sept. I am absolutely unable to just stick the dishes in the dishwasher with food or gunk on them. Just can. not. bring myself to do it. They get rinsed off & go in the dishwasher. When I last pulled out the filter, there was really nothing in it to clean out. Shrug!

We do the same here, rinse the food off. Otherwise they don't come clean.

I'm convinced this new dishwasher would get them clean but I've lived so many years previously with dishwashers that weren't worth spit that I can't break the habit of rinsing.

I have a single drawer dishwasher that I don't clean the filter of very often because I always rinse the plates before I put them in. Up until coronavirus I would use the dishwasher twice a week but now that life has slowed I actually enjoy doing the dishes by hand. I recently realised I needed to use the dishwasher so that the seals and things stayed in good condition so I cleaned the filter and ran some vinegar through on a short cycle. I cleaned the filter again afterwards and it all seemed clean and fresh. Yesterday I put a load through it again and noticed the filter wasn't sitting flat in the bottom properly. I pulled the filter out to cleaned it and I noticed what I thought was a screw in the bottom of where the filter sits. I reached in and pulled out...my favourite earring that I had lost over a year before! I had hunted all over the house and garden for that thing last year and I have no idea how it could have been hiding in the dishwasher all that time. It wasn't in the filter compartment last week so it must have been inside the plumbing somehow. From now on if we ever lose something in this house I am going to ask "Have you looked in the dishwasher?"

Oh my gosh Lola! What a story, what a find!
Well, a lesson learned & a treasure recovered.

Reminded me of my hubby's colonoscopy. Just before they took him back the doc asked if we had any questions ... I did no questions exactly, but while you are looking real close at things...I lost one of my pearl earrings and John has misplaced about six pair of reading glasses.
