Thread OP

Our 14 year old Canadian grandson moved with his family to Spring TX last year. When he visited last summer, he showed new interest in my plants. Now that surprise has grown because his Christmas wish list was topped by wanting to have his own indoor plants. Of course I can't send him plants (we're in Canada) so I want to send him an appropriate book and $ to take to a nursery. I have 2 questions:

Can anyone recommend a book to help engage this interest in indoor plants, a book to teach but not overwhelm a 14 year old?

Is there any recommendation for a good nursery near Spring TX? His Dad will need to drive him so not too far away please.

Many thanks,
Grandma Sue

What a great grandmother! I looked at Amazon this morning. There are so many books on gardening. I also thought that he may have interest in outdoor gardening this spring. I will ask for someone who is familiar with nurseries in or around Spring, TX to suggest a few nurseries for you.

My favorite book on indoor houseplants (and it served to get me hooked years ago) is Success with House Plants ~ Readers Digest.

https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/...

It was a book that introduced me to a variety of houseplants and included plant care.

I'm too far from the Spring area to know the nurseries but I'll bet someone here can help.

I am impressed with his interest and proud to hear that you are encouraging his hobby. Welcome to NGA as well as to Texas. Perhaps you can slip away and visit soon! Welcome!

We live near spring. But Spring is huge! Not sure where they live but there are nice plants at Houston Plants and Garden World of I-45/FM1960. Brookwood has a small location in Olde Town Spring. All proceeds help Adults with Special Needs. Others that great reviews is Arbor Gate and RCW Nurseries.

Thank You!
Thank you everyone for your help. I've ordered the Reader's Digest book for him. We all wish that we, the grandparents, could visit them in Spring but we can't get insurance coverage for the US. Sad Shrug!

Insurance coverage? Would that be for healthcare or driving?

Either way, that is unfortunate...

I haven't lived in Spring, Tx in over a decade but I used to enjoy going here. I remember the owner being very helpful and knowledgeable. This is in the Klein area of Spring. http://www.plantsforallseasons...

If you want variety and more than you can find in a normal garden center I would recommend Arbor gate or going to one of the nurseries in Houston such as Joshua's native plants. I have also bought from zone 9 tropicals which is smaller and in the owner's backyard. It is only open some weekends for people to come and shop, but he is really nice and has an unusual selection of really cool plants.

What a nice way to shop - in someone's backyard. That sounds so enticing.
