Had some seeds that took it upon themselves to start germinating in the mail yesterday... so was happy to get my crate of Lettuce Crispers (my cheap solution for germination trays/domes). So, the trial run begins. Fortunately I learned there is a hydroponic/cannabis support store like 1/2 mile down the road... never realized it was there... but they had huge bags of vermiculite that all the garden centers we out of.
I think they will work well. They are bigger than I visualized... this one is sitting in a standard 1020 tray for scale. Nice and tall. Lots of room for media and growth.. the top and bottom sections are about the same size... they snap together if you care to do that but lay closed regardless. Will be easy to flip open the lids once they germinate and sprout.
I was planning to use 50% vermiculite and 50% perlite as sterile media... but they were out of perlite until next week... so they will have to do with vermiculite
Gonna do a test run with (1) Pro-Mix BX, (2) Vermiculite and (3) 50/50 Vermiculite and Perlite splitting up 100 seeds randomly across the 3 treatments... all from the same cross... i put 50 seeds in this one but i think thats too many 30 would be a better number.
Then whichever seedlings look happier at the end of a month (or earlier if its apparent) will determine the approach to use for the other zillion in the fridge... will be a fun experiment.
