I believe that 'Round Midnight' is a classic-- widely grown over a long time period and proven to be a dependable performer under a wide range of conditions. Certainly has been doing admirably well for me dealing with Michigan winters and growing in dry, compacted soil and with tree root competition during the summers.
Registered as an evergreen but I think I read that was a mistake and it actually is a dormant. Certainly acts as a dormant by me.
Blooms can vary significantly in color from dark red to dark purple, seemingly depending on ambient conditions. Blooms look good either color. Not a particularly ravishing bloom but pleasing enough, especially when the large 6" blooms cover a large clump. I recommended it as a dependable landscaping plant.
