I am a big Polston fan! I bought two of them.

Have my eye on 6 of them but i'll never convince myself to do more than 3.

Gonna do a couple toothies I think and while Ruffles are not usually my thing i do like

This is gorgeous! But I'm still working on getting Atomic Orange and Feathered Serpent.

He's actually not far from me, I've been wondering if I would be allowed to pick up my purchases and avoid shipping costs.

Atomic orange intrigues me but the only pic i can find of it is the one it was registered with... i just wonder what it looks like in the average garden. AND I hope to add Feathered Serpent to my garden in the spring... fingers crossed!

With Pierce I worry about cold tolerance... I have heard from several people that Master and Bold Ruler died or dwindled terribly in zone 5 gardens... I did get it this year from a 3rd party... we shall see... while they may stand by their plants and replace them... time is lost and death is depressing (unless its of your enemies LOL). I really like Shock and Awe and Tumble Weed but...

What? "Tet seedling x seedling" isn't enough for you! LOL, I noticed that s well... also on previous year intros.... though maybe even more this year... I am guessing he is using lots of seedling crosses in an attempt to increase teeth and ruffles, etc.


I also thought the photos were remarkably run of the mill NOT really highlighting the maximum beauty of the plant... gotta respect that. I for one am kind of sick of buying an absolute stunner to find it less stunning with it's hollywood lighting dimmed and makeup removed.

At the very least seedling pictures would suffice for me anyway. Sdlg X Sdlg sounds better than Ukn X Ukn. Time will tell on all these new intros that haven't been tested across all zones or bred out of our zone.

True, but it is listed as hardy zones 4-9 on their website. Plus there is a thread here on dormancy. etc which discusses that fact that the generally accepted convention of using EV/SEV/DOR as a proxy for cold tolerance is no longer accurate with modern day hybrids... It's a great article written by Maurice that is well worth reading. In fact I need to read it again!

Getting back to the subject, I've followed Polston's hybridizing for many years with a great deal of admiration because he started a northern hardy "toothy" program the right way.... by starting with proven northern hardy plants. His first crosses were with Reckamp and Klehm cultivars rather than trying to fit the square peg into a round hole like so many others by taking an expensive tender evergreen and trying to make it into a hardy plant. And even when you try to force a tender evergreen genetically into surviving in zone 4 or 5, it doesn't mean that the seeds that you get will turn into hardy plants. In the few instances where I worked with "hardy evergreens", the resulting seeds yielded an awful lot of tender evergreen seedlings that struggled. I'm not on the toothy train, but if I were, I'd be starting with Polston plants. He has a proven hardy program with exceptionally clean, clear colors and wonderful plant habit, too. I look forward to seeing his new ones every year. They keep getting better and better and seedling x seedling is fine with me! I've seen his seedling bed!

Good advice. True, just like any trait, we cannot assume the seedlings of cold tolerant EV of SEV plants will express the desired traits of the parents.. and we may find as the gene pool continues to churn... that there are an increasing number of tender dormants which will add to the uncertainty. Yet, if a person is wanting a 12" northern tolerant toothy with 7-way branching they might well decide to start with a Kulpa, Polston, Gossard, Benz toothy and cross with a Pierce giant that has Tet Rose F Kennedy in its parentage... now it may be mostly folly... perhaps the flower size and branching will be negatively correlated with short seasons of winter growing... perhaps even cold tolerant EV plants will just dwindle year by year... BUT huge gains would be made if you happened upon the right seedling. Someone has to win the lottery (although i cant seem to match even 1 number and there is a lesson in that as well for hybridizers).

That being said, I do absolutely agree that the very BEST way to move forward is to start with northern hardy plants to the degree you can.... if you live in the north no trait is more important that basic survival in winter! LOL... plus you won't get the rust plague in your garden from southern born plants... yes, the winter will kill it but yuck... who needs that!

I am definitely on the toothy train... and will/am starting with a great deal of Kulpa, Polston, Gossard and Benz genetics... BUT i know I will toss in some crosses from SEV and even EV plants as the spirit moves me... sometimes you need to make the most of variation wherever you might find/afford it. The key (which you alluded to) is to cull cull cull without mercy all those beauties that do not make the grade... sloppy selection is the enemy of any breeding program.
