Has anyone ever grown (and cooked) Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) mushrooms??
I plan to purchase a growing kit and have read reviews that some folks have difficulty getting them to grow, so I was looking for pointers on the best care for them. They advertise that if you do it right, you can even get one or more additional flushes of them, and I would like the best bang for my buck (mushrooms are not in the database). I hear they taste somewhat like lobster and have a lot of health benefits, so I would like to try them. Also happy to hear any pointers you may have on cooking them too!

I purchased one at the store as one of their specialty items... I tried to get one that matched all the characteristics of "good" mushroom (rather than overripe) but it was pretty bad: the texture was granular and it was very slightly bitter on top of flavorless. Saute in butter did not help the situation. There is always the possibility that I still didn't manage to select a good one, but I wasn't impressed.

PS: I absolutely adore fresh:
shitake
wood ears
oyster
portabella
white button
enokitake
chanterelle
crimini
porcini
shimeji

They also had kits for portabella, oyster and shitake. Maybe I will try one of those after I try the lion's mane. I htought maybe they would all taste best if home grown and fresh.

My daughter grew some. She learned that you have to be certain to harvest them at a certain time or they in her words 'turn to dust'. I'm not sure what she meant by that. I have cooked them, I grilled them over charcoal and basted them with BBQ sauce. Delish.

Do they taste like lobster? Did she mist them twice a day?

No, they tasted like smoked BBQ sauce. Smiling

They just tasted like a good mushroom. I have not eaten lobster or shrimp for over 20 years (vegetarian) so I cannot really recall what those tasted like.

She said she followed whatever directions came with the grow kit. And, she lives in Sarasota and was growing them out in the lanai, its really humid there anyway

"turned to dust". That is a good description of what the one I ate tasted like! Good to know: that one was overripe.
