If you put your just germinated seedlings in a cool (low 60's) room with 2 regular size windows (east and south facing), will they do all right, or will they grow very poorly-tall and floppy? I am running out of room under the lights in my usual place. Thanks for your input-I have no doubt that some of my fellow gardeners have tried this!

If your house does not have much roof overhang, the South window should do OK. Just remember to turn the flat 180 degrees once/week so the seedlings will grow straight. It also depends on when Spring will be for you. If the average day for last freeze for you is mid May, keeping them in that long will be a problem. However, starting in mid-April, when you should have some good days with lows higher than 45 degrees, put them outside where they will get good light. Bring them back in when it looks like the night temp will get lower than 45 degrees. They might look pretty bedraggled by the time you plant them out, but daylilies recover quickly with good light, water, and fertilizer.

Greg, thanks so much for those very helpful suggestions!! I hadn't thought of the importance of turning them each week. By mid to late March last year I was able to put some of my things outside in a small portable greenhouse, so that should work out fine.

As Greg said, light is paramount for healthy plants. Are you able to put the seedlings right next to the window? Are there a lot of them? Would you be able to shuttle them outside on bright 40°+ days?

For supplemental light, I use full-spectrum LEDs from Feit Electric, product # GLP24FS

They're less than 2 lbs, only pull 19 watts, and would be easy to hang in a window.

Amazon sells them, but your local big box "home" store probably does too.

Is it possible for you to take some of the seedlings from under the lights and switch THEM (back and forth every couple days) with the ones by the window? Giving the ones by the window at least some time under the lights.

Sue, that IS a great idea, and I had actually thought of it before I read your post. Because at first, I thought JamesT's suggestion was really good, but then I thought that, knowing me, it would be REALLY easy for me to put the seedlings out one night and completely forget to bring them back in. And even one night of, say, 15 degree temps would probably wreck my tender plants!!! So then I did think that maybe just switching them out with the ones under lights would be a safer idea I think I'll only have about 10-15 that I can't fit upstairs under the lights, so it shouldn't be much of a problem to do that.
You know, sometimes I get upset when I see all the hurtful, harmful things on the internet. Then, when I come to a great site like ATP, and see how people put their heads together and offer all kinds of great ideas to help someone with a problem, I think what a wonderful, amazing tool it can be!
