I'm wanting to cut these old columnar cheery trees down and replace with another type of columnar tree. Don't think I'd like an evergreen as the sun comes from that direction in winter. Location is in western Washington State. This garden is on the south side of our property. The home you see is the neighbors.
I saw Twomblys Sentinel Acer but I'm thinking at mature tree will be too wide. Trying to get the right tree of the space.

Don't know what else you want out of a columnar tree, but Liquidambar styraciflua 'Slender Silhouette' is about as skinny as they get.

Yes, saw that but it gets 50 feet tall. It would be perfect for the space but 50 feet is just too tall. Wish it would top out at 25 feet.
I also saw a Beech, Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Purple' but I think they get bugs.

There are several named forms of Carpinus betulus that are narrow, with dense vertical branching habit. 'Frans Fontaine' is one that's been around a while, and I'm certain that there are more.

Bradford pears start out columnar, dense, and attractive, then mature to sprawling, weak and ugly. Beware!

My Dad had a Bradford Pair and they use to be popular commercial site trees about ten years ago. Many are being cut down now because of what you said and rot.

So many of these are great suggestions but I feel they get too tall. I was hopping they would be only maximum 20 - 25 feet.
Maybe rather than a tree a tall shrub might be better. Some of those get 10 - 16 feet tall.

Did you mean shrub? There are likely many plants that can reach that height, but narrowness might be an issue.

I know of a large shrub/small tree - Blackhaw Viburnum - that has one narrow named selection: Viburnum prunifolium 'Wilson'. I have been growing several individuals of this species for about 8 years, and they are less than four feet wide while reaching about 8 feet tall. I will be surprised if it has any widespread circulation in production.

Let me cogitate on this a bit...
