So I was told by a knowledgeable fellow that Echinocereus reichenbachii ssp. caespitosus was the only E. reichenbachii known to grow in my county in Texas. I'd have to go several Texas counties away to find a different ssp. Just gives a bit further identification to a native cacti. I have a container to grow some in, but it was bigger than I wanted. The plan is to collect several smaller cacti to plant from those plants that have encroached out into the areas that are subject to a mower, then hang the container from a sturdy limb using a chain. The ceramic container is freeze resistant, so it should be okay to leave outdoors during the winter. Hanging will give it some protection from the squirrels. I'm hoping in time it will form a colony, but not every one of them seem to do that. Some just stay small columns with a couple of offsets.
