So its that time.....all the kidz are growing really fast now and needing new digs. These are the first batch of seedlings from my Mad Scientist Binge Pollination event with my anthuriums. The ovule plant for these was Anthurium spectabile. (The ovule plant is the plant that gets pollinated so it produces seeds). The pollen plants were Anthurium schlechtendalii, Anthurium watermaliense, Anthurium pedatoradiatum and Anthuriun podopyhllum. I think the most likely pollen to have actually produced these seedlings is schlechtendalii. But who knows?

So I am using today my cheap (read: free) green mesh strawberry baskets for baskets. Because I am a cheapskate, and because these are great....roots can get out of the cracks and do their thing. And the whole basket can just be plopped into a larger container later without having to remove the plant.

I unpot the plants and find that their root systems are FANTASTIC! Look at these babies!

I stuff some pre-dampened moss in the bottom of the basket, add a plant, pad around the sides with more moss, add a hanger, and wha-la! Ready to hang

I'll grow these out and see if any of them do anything interesting with their leaves later on.

Those roots are great! The plants are bigger than I expected too, at least if that's the size of a strawberry basket here that I'm using in my mind for comparison. They look great! Nice growing!

I try to use a lot of recyclable plastic in my gardening stuff. I use the styrofoam and plastic egg boxes to germinate seeds, and the clear plastic berry boxes that have a lot of slits in the bottom and sides as germination trays as well, you can close the lid if you need extra humidity. You can also use one of those old fashioned hand held paper hole punchers and make holes to hang these from a wire hanger. Not the prettiest, but works well for plants that are rooting in moss as a temp measure to get them up off the ground

Those are great ideas! I was throwing all of my old plastic nursery pots in the recycling bin until someone told me that they aren't recyclables. I'm still confused about that because they have a ♻️ with a 1 inside which should be good to recycle here. We just can't do 3 & 6. Better safe than sorry though because they throw out the whole batch here if somebody doesn't follow the directions. Grumbling

And they wonder why we have a plastics crisis yeah.
I also reuse styrofoam cups as deep temporary pots...when you are ready to repot you can just peel them off without root damage.

Your seedlings look amazing. I look forward to seeding them the next time you post an update. What a great idea with the strawberry baskets. They probably work just as well as the wood orchid baskets with out rotting. They look great as well when they are all planted. Wish we had strawberries in the plast basket here.

They grow strawberries locally here over to Plant City, the local ones come in the green baskets. The brands imported from So Cal come in clear plastic boxes. Our local berries are a lot tastier...especially the ones from the Farmer's Market!

I bet they are tasty. We only get Barry's out here from California or Mexico. They are good but nothing like fresh ones.😉
