Looks to be Ananas bracteatus (red flowering pineapple).

It looks like Bromelia pinguin, which is a wild pineapple. Does it have really sharp spines?

Sherri is correct!!!
When I purchased my home 20+ years ago the plant was in the garden. I put up with it for quite a few years. It just kept spreading and I made the decision to rip it all out.

Scott, I only know about it because a friend of mine has a big piece of property and she lines the property line with them so wild animals won't come in or her horses go out. I noticed the beautiful flowers once when over there and she offered me some, but those spines were wicked looking, she did say they spread like wildfire. Of course I declines the offer Whistling .

What a great idea for using them to keep the wildlife out.
