I am interested in recommendations for day lilies to grow in pots
I live in Houston TX and I have grown day lilies in my gardens but
we were flooded out by Hurricane Harvey (5 feet of water in the House)
and we are now at a rental house.

I have not been growing daylilies in pots for long, and the season is early, but I do have one plant that I potted up in several different pots back in the fall and I believe every pot of it has sent up scapes already. It is an older plant 'Debbie Durio' Durio, 1974. It is listed as an early and has a 1.0 rust rating.
I think a lot of commercial growers grow daylilies in pots, and they all seem to do well. I have had over 200 in pots this year, and only a few have not done well and I think that was my fault.
There might be a shorter list of daylilies that do not do well in pots, I really don't know of any, but some people on here might have some suggestions.

I have grown 'Schnickel Fritz' in a large ceramic pot for a few years and it does well although I have to divide it every couple of years, including soon since there are 8 fans Large plants need 3+ gallon pots.

Willinator We are so sorry to hear about your garden and house being flooded. I can't imagine how that feels. Well you are here to start over. All of mine goes in the ground the first year due to our cold winter. Lost a couple that I left in a big pot for two winter's. I'm sure that you will get some good suggestions here.

I buy from local nurseries, Walmart, Lowes, online. Home Depot has daylilies. I buy online from Oakes Daylilies in TN, but just bought a daylily from a local nursery as a gift.

I think any of them can be grown in a pot for a while. Eventually, like many plants it will outgrow the pot and need to be repotted.

Unless you are moving in the next few months, I'd suggest putting them in the ground. You can always dig them up when you make a move to a permanent residence.

I grow most in pots, You just have to water, water water, but thats still the case in ground. Id go back and look at the threads in the daylily forum that says...may bloms, june blooms etc., and get a good idea of what people are growing and true garden pictures.

I am guessing I will need to check locally because most of the
offerings online were priced at $ 50 or more. Out of my price range

I really think the size of the pot is important to the conversation. A half-barrel will give you much more success than a small pot that you need to water all the time. The more soil, the better the plant will do in most cases. And I think nearly any daylily will do well if it survives the first year. The closer to the wild plant, (known as ditch daylilies or something like that) the better it will do in suboptimum conditions. I got a clump of those, and every other daylily turned brown and died back, but those wild types kept green and are huge now. I have also usually gotten my daylilies at garden centers. I know you get less choice, but you often get very healthy plants that have a lot of hands. When I've bought plants from online venders, they usually send a tiny skimpy piece and I often lose them, which is why I gave up buying plants online and will go to the nursery and pay more for a well-established plant. At the nursery, you also can see the plant in bloom.
