We bought these two specimens at a local plant nursery yesterday. They called it a Donkey's Ear. I'm trying to figure out which species it is so I can add the photos to the database.

I originally thought that, but it doesn't seem to be a perfect match. For one, mine is more green without the white underside.

for another, mine only produces babies at the tips rather than all down the sides of the leaves.

Dave: I was thinking that gastonis was one of the Kalanchoe's that produced babies from the leaf tips and that the dark leaf markings came when it received more direct sun. I know I've seen that Kalanchoe here in Florida before ... I'll have to think some more. Smiling

By the way, it sure is a nice looking specimen!

You may be right, then, about the colors and light.

The leaves are huge, about 18 inches long. It's a really impressive specimen!

Dave: I hope it's okay ... I went over to the Cactus & Succulent forum and posted a link back here to see if anyone recognizes your great Kalanchoe!

I appreciate that, thank you!

I was admiring this plant today and I think it indeed a gastonis-bonnieri. The color differences are easily explained by culture and light differences.

Basically, I do not know anything about Kalanchoe.
I tried looking for pictures only. Just for curiosity. If I found something like this is more due to luck.
The only plant what I found it like the plant above it is on this page.

http://www.glasshouseworks.com...

If you go down the page until Kalanchoe Mortagei Crenata. To be compared, especially the last picture of the line at this position. (to see beter clik on small pictures)

I do not know what means the name. A hybrid between K.mortagei and K.crenata? A variety crenata of K.mortagei? Maybe just a name?

It's very haphazard attempt to identify cultivars or hybrids after pictures. Generally speaking, you can never be sure, if you don't have more information about the origin of the plant.

Another page

Picture changes in slideshow, but slowly.

I have to agree with Justin that this looks like the plant on glasshouseworks named Kalanchoe Mortagei Crenata.

Kalanchoe crenata is accepted but in review... could it be the same species as Kalanchoe mortagei which is accepted on the Plant List? Given a history of taxonomic confusion it's possible, both species names could be listed with sellers due to an uncertainty.

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

In any case, the species should be given in lower case, many use a capital which should be used for cultivars so leads to confusion.

There's a photo of Kalanchoe mortagei on DG (if you can access that Dave!) in an article by palmbob ..

More photos ..

Thank you both (and everyone in this thread) for this. I looked through quite a few photos of Kalanchoe mortagei and I agree that's my plant. I've imported the photos!

Way to go Justin, that indeed looks like the plant in question. Thumbs up I searched and searched and couldn't find a match, but I'm not very good at going back and forth comparing pictures.

And, I'm glad our super sleuth Janet popped in to help too, thanks for those helpful links Janet!

Just another example of common name vs botanical name....the common accepted name for Gastonis-Bonnieri is Donkey Ear.

LOL, *Blush* I just noticed that it isn't your Kalanchoe but rather the earlier photo from Dave when he was looking for an identity. It's still a really great looking Kalanchoe. Green Grin!
