I'm interested in trying to grow plumeria inside. I've just recently smelled a bloom here in Mexico, and fell in love! MUST try to grow at home in upstate SC. Could leave outside in the summer I'd imagine, but we're in 7b/8a so winter would be too cold there. Anyone have any advice on growing them? Easier varieties? What conditions are best?

I'm here in Canada and can grow them, so there's no reason you cant!!

I put mine out in the sun during the summer. Pay close attention to watering. It's cooler here at night (high 60's mostly) than you have to deal with so it might not be a problem for you.

With Plumeria, cool + wet = rot.

Since my nights are cool I water in the morning. They can be thirsty. I keep them in full sun.

Once winter hits and they have to come inside, beginning of Sept. here, I back off on watering and let them go dormant. Barely watering only when needed to keep them alive. When they start developing new leaves, roughly March, I start watering again and fertilizing.

You could probably get away without the dormant period down there, especially if you have a nice sunny window they could be in when it cools down (does it cool down?).

Yep, we even get a little snow here, maybe twice, with 2-4 inches that melts the next day. We're in the upstate, north/western part of the state. I have ginger outside that I think didn't survive the winter :-(

Be careful don't overwhelm yourself at the start. The need quite a bit of room if you have to bring them inside.
Think 5 or 10 gallon pots.

How long before you put them into the 5 or10 gallon pots? Does it happen in 1 season or does it take longer? I ask because I have 2 right now and I would love to have more. Thanks for everything Tina

Depending on your growing conditions. I go by when they get root bound.
