I do some hybridizing, but this year, even though I pollenated, I ended up breaking off the pods. I have not grown out seedlings since 2001.

So, this thread is for all the lurkers who do not hybridize.

I have some of my daylilies in rows, but some are mixed into the perennial beds.

Here is Little Boy Bob with a backdrop of shrub roses, phlox and coneflower.

For all those who do not hybridize, lets see how you use daylilies in your landscape.

Here's mine. There are 2 additions to the first bed. I'm thinking of adding another.
Before the 2nd add on.
Early spring another bed.

If all daylilies made no pods I would be quite happy. I have to watch for those bee pods and snap them off to make sure there are no seeds. Daylilies are here to be pretty garden flowers. My beds are arranged to look pretty. I have my dips and my tets mixed together. It makes no difference to me. I am not going to be dapping pollen anyway.

I started some seeds last fall. I abused them terribly this summer...no rain weeds feet high etc. I decided I did not want to grow any more right now. Not until I am able to grow them with some respect!

There are lots of people who grow daylilies, but have never pollinated them. I think it may be the majority of daylily growers.

Are there topics relating to growing daylilies without hybridizing that interest members here?

I like my daylilies to be excellent garden flowers. I don't want to have to fuss over them in order for them to grow and flower well. Not that I don't take good care of my garden, I do. Just that I don't need any wimpy fuss budgets.

Me, either. Have given away some dozen over the last year for not performing in a way pleasing to me. But they are doing just fine in pleasing their new owners. Look for form--simple is best for me. Color--reds and purples, but have been given some bonuses on other colors that I would never have picked and that are beautiful keepers. Temperature tolerance--hot here even if NOT in a drought year. Name--have a range of B monster movie names like Dracula and Bela Lugosi. Have Oz names like A Little Fire, Scarecrow, space opera like Flash Gordon, and music like Crossfire Hurricane and Crystal Blue Persuastion names on the wish list.

Seeds might be fun later. Have only had a couple form seed pods in the last two years, so not anything to do right now.

Have at least a few perennials mixed in with all the daylilies and vice versa. Use some as memorials, like the Joshua Cullins daylily. Finally got it planted last weekend. Didn't realize the rocks were placed in the shape of a rough shield until I stepped back. Appropriate, so I left it.

Such beautiful gardens and memorial I love the way you can see the daylilies growing freely, in a form that complements a real home and yard. I'm plopping my new plants in a garden up against a fence, like yours, springcolor ... i'm very glad to see how that arrangement looks! If mine turn out to bloom half as nicely, I'll be ecstatic. I've also been itching to make a smaller garden that is more meaningful according to name - you can't help but bump into so many that recall places, times, and faces ... never on a sunday, cindy's eyes (my sister), blue nile .... makes me smile just seeing them woven into the fabric of everyone's lives. Would love to see more pictures.

Do you all mix your daylilies into your flower beds, or do you have them in dedicated beds? I know most people who hybridize do have dedicated beds. Makes it easier, faster to pollinate. But, rows of just daylilies can look totally different than mixing them into the beds.

Some of my beds are daylilies only, some are in mxed perennial beds and some are in my vegetable garden (and I have tomatoes and peppers in one of my daylily only beds!).

I have one bed that is specifically for dips (+ other perennials) but the rest are planted as to how I like them - a "red bed" and eventually some other theme beds.~Jan

I am in the process of trying to move daylilies to have tets in one bed and dips in another. It will make it easier for hybridizing.I also have some perennials in the beds, like tulips, heucheras and columbines. Because I feed the birds in the winter, I often have sunflowers come up in the beds.

I had been gardening for over 30 years before the daylily addiction hit so my gardens have many perennials in them. I do have a couple of beds that just have daylilies in them but I agree that it can get boring and look pretty bland once all the daylilies are through blooming. I like to mix some of the daylilies into my other mixed gardens. I find that grasses especially make a nice back drop for the flowers, especially the daylilies

In this garden I have shasta daisy, pholx, lots of lilium, peonies, hardy geranium, cone flower, feverfew (which self seeds everywhere) and Campanula persicifolia. As with many gardens I find that white is the great unifier If I was to do this garden over I would make sure that I had a few more later blooming perennials in it.


This garden has many daylilies in it but it also had a huge clump of varigated Miscanthus grass and there are also quite a few peonies and lilium in this garden. Since the peonies bloom before the daylilies their beautiful blooms don't compete with each other.


You can see in this pic how the shasta daisies compliment the daylilies.


The grass really makes a nice backdrop for the daylilies. The peony leaves add texture to the garden and help to add contrast to the garden even when nothing is blooming. The daylily in this pic is LONG STOCKING.

Thanks very much Susan, it means a lot right now as I have just moved and dug up all those gardens,they no longer exist, only in these pictures now. They are sitting in pots and plastic bags waiting for me to plant them at my new home. I feel very fortunate that I was able to garden there for 18 years. There were no gardens at all when we moved there. Now I have to start all over again. It all seems a bit overwhelming right now. Wish I was 18 years younger

Thanks for your kind comments Leslie and Springcolor. I just hope I have enough energy to do it all again. The house has to be worked on also as it's been empty for 2 years, a foreclosure. I think at my age I must be crazy to do all this I didn't think I would miss my gardens so much I wish I had more time to come up with some kind of garden plan but it's beginning to get a little cold around here so I've really got to get as much as possible in the ground. There will not be enough hours in the day and boy do I hope my back holds out!!!!
