Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Chaotic Design')

I purchased Chaotic Design in August, 2018 in bloom. I used the pollen from it that year, and I hope to have seedlings blooming this season.

It has come through two winters here very well, and increased from two fans to six. It has not reached the registered height of 52". In my garden it has been about 26", but last summer was very dry, so maybe that affected the height.

Valerie, I can't wait to see those seedlings in the future.

I've tried this plant a couple times ... it doesn't do well for me. Little to no increase after 3 years the first time then died off. When it did put up a scape it was very short and had few blooms. I tried again and had the same results. Not one I could recommend.

I have this one planted along a pathway that has heavy snow cover from shoveling the path in winter, so I wonder if that increases the chance of winter survival. Here is a photo taken today. It is doing well this spring considering we have had late snow and record breaking cold temperatures.

I have only had Chaotic Design in the gardens for two years, so I believe it is still becoming well established. But these blooms are stunning!

@touchofsky, yes - I absolutely believe that here in colder gardens, the amount of snow cover is a significant factor in how well Chaotic Design performs.

Our average winter (zone 3, very rural mountains) we get over 360 inches of snow... At any given time, even after winter thaws and constant settling of the snowpack, the gardens are generally under at least 3 to 4 feet of snow cover during a normal winter (snow is a great insulator). I regularly garden with plants hardy to zone 4 that survive well here, and also some that are rated for zone 5.

While dormant daylilies are an obvious choice, I have many SEV and Evergreen daylilies that thrive here. I also mulch (pretty much everything except Bearded Irises).

Chaotic Design has had zero problems here and blooms beautifully here. I would not hesitate to recommend it.
