My sister wants to give my mom a fruit tree, and I recommended growing something that does well in Texas. I know that some fruits like cherries and apricots require too many chill hours to produce fruit. She already has pear and fig trees. What else would you recommend? She lives in East Texas just north of Longview. Do you have any nursery recommendations that specialize in trees for Texas?

Figs, Loquats, Mandarin Orange, Grapefruit, and many other citrus, Persimmon, and some stone fruit that need fewer chill hours but will require more care.

Besides the figs and pears, peaches and pomegranates should do well. Also there are several different varieties of pears. You can get each kind so you will get all kind of flavor. If you live in south Texas, you expand the variety of all these trees. My figs are appropriate for north Texas only, it is called Celeste type that resistant to frost for a few days.

Is she in an area that could grow summer plums? There are natives that only make bushes, but some domesticated ones are good. How MUCH room does she have?
