Stop paying outlandish prices for row covers for brassicas (cabbages, broccoli and cauliflower) to keep bugs away. Use tulle, that thin, lightweight, extremely fine, soft flowy machine-made netting fabric often used for wedding veils, gowns, etc. Works even better than traditional row covers. Let's more sun in, and easily allows water to penetrate. Only a fraction of the cost compared to traditional row covers for the same purpose..

54" x 120' at Amazon (or other sites) for just $12.35 vs. 2, 3 or 4 times that much for traditional brassica row covers!

This is the first season I am using it, but even if it only lasts one season, I only used about 20 yards. That will give me 6 year's worth at $2.06 a year. Can't beat that for a protective row cover.

@MoonShadows perfect timing. I'm looking to get insect netting for row covers. Need something wider than 5' so will have to see it comes in wider size. Would you say this material could hold up to a chipmunk if properly secured to the wood bed?

A chipmunk would be able to chew through this material. I am using this for cabbage pests. On my strawberries, that get eaten by chipmunks, I am using a metal covering...hardware cloth. Might be overkill, but chipmunks can and will chew through anything that is material or plastic.

I used tulle for the first time this year and will definitely use it again. It kept chipmunks and birds from eating the veg and flowers in my container garden, and it protected my tomato plants from the rabbits and the woodchuck. Not that these creatures couldn't chew through the tulle if they tried, but it seems to discourage them on contact. A bolt of green was about $14 on EBay.

Wow! The chipmunks got to all my sunflower seeds and seedlings and the zinnias as well. I will definitely use tulle this coming spring!

Just a follow up from me. The tulle protected my cabbages at a fraction of the cost of a row cover. We made plenty of cole slaw and sauerkraut this year from our cabbages. I will definitely use it again next season.
