Hello!

I got this Epiphyllum from my grandmother. This is a pice that broke of the mother plant. She kept the roots in wather for a day or two and I planted it in a pot with soil and I slightly damped the soil. However, the plant looks a little bit week, like its dried and its soft to the touch. Any ideas or recommendations?

I would tent it with plastic to make a mini greenhouse. That will help it hold leaf moisture.

It actually reminds me of a Schlumbergera, though not sure which cultivar. Love those pretty blooms
I will just let others talk about its care, I am not too good with it. I have killed a lot..still trying to rejuvenate one oh well..my own learning curve. I was only good with it first two years, then all went downhill..

My grandmother is 85 and she does everything her own way. She uses whichever soil she can find, she places the plants everywhere without considering light and her plants grow like crazy.

Flowers like Hatiora (Easter cactus) but I have not seen a stem like that on my one and only Hatiora.

Awesome Grandma! Your media there must be quite good too! For what its worth, these types do not like too much direct sun, and likes well draining media. That is as far as I can say, and likes warmer temps. Overwatering is bad especially when temps are low..so be mindful of watering, especially in the media you are using.

Recently a stem of my Epiphyllum got knocked out of its container. I left it out to callous over and kind of forgot about it; it became quite soft and wrinkled like yours. I went ahead and potted it up not knowing if it would recover and over a course of about 3 weeks or so it plumped back up nicely and regained its turgidity. So, there is certainly hope for yours! My only concern would be since yours is flowering, that it might be a bit more stressful for the plant; I think Sally's idea of tenting might be a good idea to help in its recovery. Good luck!

My Epiphyllums are much tougher indeed. They actually need to feel some temperature cool down and then gives me lovely blooms in Spring. With humongous blooms too that is why I still try to grow them.

I would not recommend tenting either Schlumbergeras or Epis, it is too easy to induce fungal rot when there is insufficient airflow around them.

Thank you! Well, I'm not sure now... Should I tent the plant or shouldn't I tent it at all. Lots of recommendations

These are epiphytic cactus, and like any plant that grows on/in trees, it needs filtered sun, fast draining medium, and constant air movement.

Schlumbergeras do have thermo-photoperiodic qualities. Blooming time is influenced by the amount of light and darkness plus the temperature drop, to induce blooming. So I would just enjoy the blooming show you have now...pretty much it will start the process by Fall to Spring again.
