Hello everyone! So it's probably not a good idea, because it's not like everyone here knows all about oleanders, but I really enjoy them and have been dealing with them for years. I am proposing to make a forum specifically for oleanders (Nerium).
Does anyone else like this idea?

I haven't seen an oleander since I lived in California 60 years ago.
They always had them outside schools. I always thought that was
strange. I wonder how an oleander forum would go.

Yes the plant is poisonous.

Every part of an oleander is toxic. The flowers look so beautiful and smell so great though!

That's why it was so peculiar that all schools in LA (at least Van Nuys) were lined
with lovely oleander. I wonder if that's still true. This was 1959 or so. David

Almost our entire property is surrounded by oleanders, even though we have two little ones. As long as they're watched properly nothing should happen

But about the school, you're right, that is peculiar. Was it a kindergarten or preschool? Because if it was an elementary or something than those kids are old enough to be taught not to play with those plants.

I guess they can be taught -- though the
14-year-olds I've met couldn't be taught
anything!

Haha true, teenagers are hard to be taught. With something like this though, I think teenagers can know not to eat poisonous leaves. Because of course, oleanders are only poisonous to you if you eat/drink (whatever you want to call it) the sap.

I wouldn't mind an oleander forum. Oleanders are one of my favorite flowers. They smell so good as well!

I'd love an oleander forum!

I'm rather opposed to plant-specific forums. Why not start a thread in the shrub forum about oleanders and see where that might go?

Oleanders are a popular landscape plant here in Florida and I think there may be threads regarding them in the Tropicals forum and the Florida Gardening forum.

Given the risks of coming into contact with oleanders, but considering the possibility of creating pleasant landscapes with them, we could discuss the possibility of using oleanders for this purpose.
An example I saw here in Italy when they were used on the highway that connects the north with the south of the country to prevent glare from cars that proceed in the opposite direction.
The effect was fantastic but they were quickly removed probably because pruning and maintenance were too expensive.
If it could create a variant of this plant that maintains the same characteristics but with a slower growth, one could think of relaunching uses of this type for oleanders.

I definitely agree, Angelo. They do grow quite fast, and can be a lot of work. But when they're in bloom, it's totally worth it.
