Sunscald damage. Warm temperatures, high humidity, and high nitrogen amounts can increase susceptibility of trees to frost cracking. Fluctuating growth conditions may also cause splitting of bark. Sunscald, especially in winter months, can cause bark injury to thin barked or young trees. Sunscald is a common disorder that happens with extreme temperature fluctuations. However, it may not show up until the warmer part of the growing season due to internal seasonal growth.
