These 2 species names refer to the same plant, but the entry in the database has them under nussbaumerianum instead of adolphi.

I realize that's what's listed in the CoL

http://www.catalogueoflife.org...

but it's not right. The name adolphi was published 12 years earlier so it should take precedence.

S. adolphi (Hamet 1912)
S. nussbaumerianum (Bitter 1924)

Some of the back story on Carl Purpus and these plants in this 2010 article:

https://www.researchgate.net/p...

Note that these authors undercut their credibility by using an incorrect spelling for the species name adolphi, but the underlying story is basically correct (dates confirmed elsewhere), and the prior publication of adolphi should make it the name for the combined species.

Baja, I've run into this several times -- cases in which the CoL and other sources list an accepted name that's newer than the synonym. In a couple of cases I researched, I found that the earliest name was subsequently removed as an illegitimate name and then reinstated at a later date. I don't know that this is true in this case, but it's possible in view of the many sources incorrectly insisting on adolphii as the spelling.

In any case, I would rather use the CoL as the authority in matters pertaining to our database.

I will continue to indulge my curiosity and maybe eventually figure this thing out. Smiling There is a second publication on the subject from 2010 which I have not been able to track down:

Stephenson, R. (2010) Rethink Sedum adolphi. Newslett. Sedum Soc. No. 95: 23-24.

If anybody is able to locate a copy of this 2-page article on the interwebs, I would be curious to see it.

You are welcome Baja. He is a very nice man and is very helpful.
Maybe you can share what you learn about this sedum.

Hi there! I'm wondering if any of you ever got to the bottom of this. I have the same dilemma, trying to determine which species my Sedum is: adolphi or nussbaumerianum, or if those are the same species where the latter is a synonym. There's a crazy amount of confusion out there. The COL (as you've established) has them combined, but the IPNI has them separate -- two citations are S. adolphi: 275004-1, 231637-2; and one is S. nussbaumerianum: 231799-2. (Apologies, I'm not allowed to put links yet). I'm hopeful there can finally be an answer.
