I'm putting up a hoop house this fall, and am searching for ideas of what vegetables I should try to grow to pass the time after my summer garden dies out. I probably should be starting them by now- or really soon I think.

My main thoughts are carrots, broccoli, cabbage and onions. any ideas on what varieties to try of these for the best chance at success? Any other suggestions?

Where are you? much will depend on your climate. Brassicas and carrots are always good choices for all/winter gardens. Onions will depend on type and latitude. Those of us in the south start short day onions in September for winter growing. As you go further north spring planting becomes the norm, Of course bunching onions are more flexible. As for variety I would suggest that you browse the Plant Database for varieties that gardeners have liked. Choose those grown under conditions similar to yours. I do grow a fairly extensive fall/winter garden, but my conditions may be quite different.

How about some of the more exotic stuff that's expensive in the store. Broccolini. Romanesco. Kailan. Those cute little Parisian carrots.

I've tried a few Asian greens. Tat soi is cute, tasty, and handles cold well.
Plant it and they will come.

I'm thinking of growing watercress, escarole, frisée, endive, beet, lettuce, arugula, onion, garlic, collard, kale, peas etc. it's endless. In fact I'm looking forward to it. As a gardener I have to find things to get excited about after the summer.

SoCal, I've been curious about something. Ya'll live in zone 10a...southern California. Do you really have a "winter" there that impacts vegetable gardening greatly? Are you in the coastal, inland, or mountain zone? From previous posts of yours it seems that you are more in the coastal region...???

I'm more coastal, I get a breeze from the sea, I'm about 5-9 miles as the crow flies.
But I did get a book, 4 season harvest by Eliot Coleman, he's from Maine, see link below and if you grow vegetables inside you can grow them year round.

We have occasonal light frosts. If it gets down to about 34 degrees at night I take my patio plants in. Tomatoes struggle in the winter. Most sun-loving garden vegetables do. I love our California winters. I know that summer grows our food but I hate summer with every fiber of my being!!

Hey, anyone still out there? This weekend I ripped out six of my seven tomato plants and now there is so much room. I'm in South Carolina so I am turning my efforts to fall garden. So far I have some sugar snap pea seedlings that are about 6 inches tall. What are you planning? I have seeds for these and will plant soon, how about you?

I will plant some of those on your list, not rutabaga nor chard though, but my arugula seeds have sprouted. Waiting for Wando peas to come up. Amarillo carrot seeds which I received have also sprouted. I'm planning to sow some leeks and planting my garlic soon. I just need a moment, it's too hot out there.

Hi Judy,
I hope to. lean up some tomorrow and have loads of seed saved from spring brassica, plus packets of radish, lettuce, maybe spinach. Spring collards and kale are still out there but beat up by bugs. Mustard greens? I have Chinese giant mustard and tyfon, both should do well in fall. My tomatoes need to come out, they are horrible.
Plant it and they will come.

Tyfon is sort of like turnip green. See plantfiles, pretty sure I commented there as well as another user.
Plant it and they will come.
