I grew this from mystery seed. It is not a redbud tree. Anyone?? It seems to enjoy partial sun best here in NWGa.

Thank You!

May I ask why you say it's not a redbud? The new leaves look like that of a redbud to me. They are understory trees, so they do best in partial sun.

What makes you convinced that it isn't a redbud? Leaf shape, zig-zag twig, and swelling at the leaf base (where is joins the petiole) all match redbud.

I have the same thing—a volunteer I dug up. My only question has been, what KIND of redbud? Hilarious!

Eastern Redbud. Looks like they go all the way over to NM. Smiling

We have one in the front yard (not sure who planted it or if it was a volunteer... it is not the happiest in full sun). But, we have three of her children in the backyard under other trees.

I agree that your looks like an Eastern redbud however, on seedlings the ID is not always easy (eastern vs. western). I think they will also hybridize.

In Albuquerque, the western (C. occidentalis) may do better for you although they are more of a multi-stemmed large shrub. Occidentalis handles heat, low humidity and full sun very well.

Thank you for your comments, @Hamwild and @KellyFW. Both canadensis or occidentalis are apparently fine in this area, although when I searched this a few weeks ago, I was actually leaning toward Chinese Redbud (C. chinensis) based on the leaf shape. There is apparently one at our BioPark botanical garden, which only recently re-opened, so I've been meaning to go take a look. I also just discovered that a friend who brings me fallen leaves every year has a redbud on his property and I'll bet that's how the seed arrived in my yard. When he returns from out of town I plan to ask if he knows what he has.

I didn't mean to hijack this thread. @IJsbrandtGA are you still there? We're all pretty sure you have a redbud! Smiling
