I just created my plant list on the National Gardening Assn. site. Question: is there a way to search my list for a specific plant? I don't see that function but it would be a time saver rather than having to guess what page a particular plant might be on. Thanks.

I have the same problem.

I know my daylilies start on page 7 or 8 and they go alphabetically. Other than that, it's hunt and peck, page flipping. Especially when you have things with 100 names, like gayfeather, snakeroot, blazing star, liatris... some are in front of the daylilies, some are behind the daylilies. It's not always easy to find things.

Strange this issue has just come up being I just noticed it yesterday on my ipad. I don't have the problem on my laptop. The ipad now shows 18 pages, I don't recall it being like that before but that could just be me. Anyhow when doing a Control F search yesterday I noticed that for the first time. So I came in and looked on the lap top and it shows no pages and the entire list can be searched instead of a page at a time.

Larry, I've looked at my list on both my Macbook Air and my Mac desktop, using several different browsers, and the view is the same on both devices, regardless of browser. It's always page by page with no search function. It's strange that you are having a different experience. Thanks for the input to both you and Tim.

@Lyshack and @nancyindg

Tim,
You can narrow your search by going to the link called, and I will use myself as an example, so in my case:

There are 759 plants in touchofsky's plant list.
Click on that to take you to your Plant List page.

At the top of that page there is a white box, and go to
Show only genus

Click on Show all

A list will come up with all of the types of plants you have, go down the list until you get what you want, in this case, Hemerocallis, click on that and then click on the little green box at the bottom "Update View" and a list of all your daylilies will come up, and only daylilies, listed alphabetically. You can also sort this list by date added. That puts newly added cultivars first.

Nancy,
As, for finding a particular daylily cultivar, the best I have found is to make separate categories. For example, I have categories for miniatures, smalls, seedlings, unregistered, etc., and file them that way, then you can narrow down your search more quickly. You could create whatever categories best suit your collection.

Had not thought about that. I need to check my ipad tomorrow (keep it in the shed) and see if I somehow changed from just showing the genus.

Valerie, thanks for the tips. I do admit that I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth, complaining about the lack of what should be a very basic search feature in free software. I think it all boils down to what the programmer decided to include in the functionality and perhaps what I'm looking for wasn't even considered. I have a Word document in which I've entered the information that is important to me: Name, color description, year of purchase and source, and a hyperlink to the NGA plant database entry. Unfortunately there's a bug in the version of Word that I have and the hyperlinks don't work. What I like about the plant list on the NGA site is the photo accompanying each plant when a photo is available and the active link to the plant's entry in the db. Fortunately, at the moment I don't have an overwhelming amount of daylilies (the only plants I've entered) and although it's annoying, I can live with things as they are regarding finding specific plants. Perhaps if enough people voice a desire for the search feature it will be incorporated in the software if there is a future iteration.

Valerie, thanks for the tip. Can't believe I didn't notice that. If it were a snake it would have bit me. I've already used it three times while I was in my plant list checking it out.

I also don't want to sound like I'm complaining about a database I'm happy to have access to and use. I still understand Nancy's point, though. If I were Ginny with 6,000 pages of daylilies... Smiling

So let me give you a "what's cool about the database" to offset that comment. I think it's really cool that there may be 80 pictures of Stella de Oro in the database, but if I add one, it's my picture that shows up on my plantlist. It's very cool that someone made that happen.

I have 342 daylilies in my category "Named Cultivar Daylilies' and I have lots of data added to each one, basically all the data from the database that I want, some general data excluded. On my lap top I can do a control F search for any Cultivar, I can search for 6-way branching, or 40+ bud count, etc. using "control + F'. It searches the entire category.
I will check my ipad tomorrow and see if that is possible, but I doubt it. Also on my ipad, I am missing the first column that I have on the lap top, the "Actions: column".

@nancyindg,
I pulled up your list just as a test, and I was able to do a "control + F" search also of the entire list, I typed in "yellow" and it brought up the last plant in your list. There were 195 plants showing in the list.

Larry, I can't do the same control +F search that you did unless the daylily that I'm looking for is on the current page I'm viewing. Do you have a magic computer?

Also, I looked at the page that has other users' plant lists. You aren't on it with user name Seedfork. There's a notation at the bottom of the list: "Lists not updated within a certain amount of time are not shown on this page." Just out of curiosity, have you accessed your own list but not updated it "within a certain amount of time" (whatever that unspecified time might be)? There aren't nearly as many users' lists available as I would expect but it's probably because they haven't done anything with their lists, and thus don't show up. Another thought: maybe there is a way to make your plant list private, but I don't see that option (not that I want to do it.)

@ancyindg,
Very strange. I update something in my list almost everyday!
I got on my wife's iPad this morning and it shows the column "Actions" that is totally missing on my ipad. Also on her iPad I don't have page listings and can search my entire list.
Please try clicking on my user name here then go to my plant list and see if you can pull it up.

Edited to add:
So I just went out to the shed and got on the site using my iPad (old one) still showing pages and missing the first column, so I signed out and signed back in and voila: no pages showing, full listing searchable, and the "Actions" column was back in place.

I hadn't logged out/in but just did it. Results the same for both of our plant lists.

I recommend going over to the "site talk" forum and asking Dave how to fix it so you can search the full listing.

Ok, go to your preferences and up the items shown per page to 500. Then you will have only two pages even if you have a Ginny daylily listing.

Larry, thank you for that info! I had looked on preferences when I was looking for a search capability, but may have lost interest before I got to that one Sighing! having them all on a page helps a lot Thank You!

That is what I did. I only have three categories of plants and in daylilies I have 340 listed. I used the settings option to show 500 items per page, so all of mine show up on one page. Then I do a "ctrl" + "f" on the keyboard to search by name.

By having the 500 items per page, I can also use "ctrl" + "f" to search a thread if needed. Doesn't happen too often, but I have used it.

Just so Nancy doesn't feel alone, the control-f doesn't work for me, either. It only searches the current page. Made me wonder if there were a set up thing where instead of 30 per page, you could select ALL. That would make my control-f work. or Maybe it's the browser we're using. I'm using Chrome. Maybe I should try Edge or something, but no time now.
