I have read that the ITOHs and the lactifora peonies will bloom reliably in 8b and can bloom in 9 with care. I'm a true 8b with microclimates across the property. I have an old stand of mountain laurel about 10-12 ft in height. I would like to try Pastel Splendor as my ITOH and Joker as my lactifolia. I will keep you apprised of how they do. My soil is quite acidic here - I will need to adjust perhaps in a raised bed which would help with chilling as well.

I do grow apples here, the deep south don't do well - they set buds before our winter is over. I had a Tropic Sweet that the deer ate to the ground one year. I can grow Anna (300-400 chill hours) but don't get the advantage of cross-pollination with Golden Dorset (100 chill hours). That one will self-pollinate. I'm going to try a few species with 400-600 chill hours. Grannie Smith and Pink Lady come to mind.

@Dragonkeep Thanks Barb! I think the itoh will do very well in your zone. I am not sure about Joker but it does not hurt to try. I would love to hear how they do for you. The fact that you can keep them on a raised bed amended with lime should guarantee more success in getting them to bloom. Do you have a spot where they may get some afternoon shade?

Absolutely have afternoon shade spots. Use some of those places for daylilies that want to melt but I have plenty more where they came from. How deep do the roots go and wide for that matter to get their raised bed to be a place that they like? I figure it will be a couple of years before we have real confirmation of their success.e
