Nice, indeed. I'll bid on a few - though I expect to be blown out of contention rather early.

Wow, hard to tell if it takes my bid and just runs it up or if it is displaying a lower amount to other bidders. That is pretty annoying.

EDIT:

Yeah, it ran them up.

That isn't how an auction is supposed to work. I am willing to pay up to X dollars if someone bids it that high, I am not wanting to pay X dollars just because I bid that amount. There is no point in bidding until the last minutes of the last day.

Is this how previous auctions worked?

Top, did you try the proxy bid option?

This is new this year, and I don't know how it works.

No, I didn't try the proxy, but I may look into it.

On the plus side, the largest of my bids - which was over $250 - was beaten, so I am less annoyed by the way things are working. I usually bid exactly the amount that I am willing to pay and won't get drawn into a bidding war. This system will prevent me from making those sort of bids because I'd prefer to pay less if possible.

I bid for rockii seeds #1 without the proxy bid option and I got out bid every time until I supposedly reached the maximum bid placed by a previous bidder. It looks like the minimum bid stays until somebody out bids the maximum.

That is the proxy bid option in action - LG was correct.

Top you are correct about how the bids work. For the past two years, I tune in the last 15 minutes of the auction. That is when the true bidding starts. When bidding time expires, it will offer the top bidders 5 additional minutes to top the maximum bid. Each time someone tops it, it will notify the other top bidders and give them x # of minutes to counter. Interesting. It used to be people would swoop in at the last second and steal the bid from you. All is fair in love and war with/of peonies.

There were some wild bids at the last minute. I think Claire de Lune was at $225 the last time I got a notification.

I hope they post the winning bids so we can see who got a bargain!!

Claire de Lune is actually pretty hard to find in the US right now. GH Wild frequently sells it, I think, but this was not an on year.

EDIT: $25 was too much for me :)

I checked on my donations. Wow, the Juliska and Rose Heart combo fetches $300! I think I will have to gift this winner a very nice bonus.

Yes, I just looked at final prices, some were insane! I had no problem with finding Caire de Lune a few years ago and Solaris sells it every year for $20.

I managed to get Brother Chuck, Marshmellow Tart, White Lullaby, and Many Happy Returns for $145. About $35 per root for grower/vendor roots. Not bad.

Annisquam went for $230! I checked my records and I paid $34.99 for mine.

At one point someone REALLY overbid for some seeds. 15 tor $2447.00 !

I would have had a panic attack if I had made this mistake. They did fix it.

It was a fun event and there were some bargains!

I agree There were some crazy bids! Though I am glad to see that APS had a successful auction. Maybe the lockdown has gotten more new people appreciating peonies and gardening.

Gary, you will love that one. It's one of Klehm's that is at the public gardens and stands strong stemmed and stunning.
