I am GOING to do it this fall. I'm going to plant some seeds. Is there a rule of thumb about what to plant in fall and what in winter?

Winter sowing is planting outside in miniature green houses. Usually recycled containers like glass jars, milk jugs etc are used. https://extension.psu.edu/succ.... The concept is similar to the use of cold frames which we old timers used.

Fall planting usually refers to planting for a second season. Usually for plants that are somewhat cold tolerant like brassicas, spinach, carrots Which produce before hard freezes or in a few cases overwinter.

It might be a little late for sowing fall crops in SC, but seeds are cheap so maybe try. Or see if your local garden centers have vegetable starter plants for sale now like cabbage..

I don't do edibles except herbs. There are several flowers that are suitable for fallsowing in the milk jugs.

My cilantro self sowed from this spring's crop. Parsley might grow...
