My daughter just bought a home in Elgin, OK, which is near Lawton, and about an hour south of Oklahoma City. She has two trees that kind of look like Apple trees but the fruit that is currently on them looks like some sort of berry or cherry. Anyone recognize what type of fruit this is, what type of tree this is and how/if it should be pruned?

Looks like a Crabapple, Malus

Thank you both for your suggestions. I've thought of them both but don't think that it's either one. The fruit looks as big as it will get and there is no evidence of fruit on the ground.

with Rj, crabapple. The fruit is the right size for it, and the one leaf I see looks like a crabapple leaf, also the general shape and growth pattern of the tree looks like a crabapple. Crabapple fruit doesn't always fall to the ground.

I stand corrected! I just went out and examined the tree and fruit again. Then compared them to crab apple malus pics. Looks the same. My only experience with crab apples were when I was a kid and we ate them. Maybe they were just bad apples. 😊. Thank you so much for your "good eyes" and experience. Just hope the trees flower beautifully in the spring!

It looks like Crabapple to me also. There are many varieties but here's one in our database where you can check out photos for comparisons: Toringo Crabapple (Malus toringo)

Peggy, I do hope it's a good bloomer. I think crabapple blossoms are gorgeous! That seems to be a very nice tree, I hope it does well. And the fruit makes delicious jelly.

Sometimes. Some crabapples taste so bad, the birds won't even eat them. Taste before you start jelly making.

Can't thank you all enough for all your information! It's difficult to travel to different parts of the country and try to figure out what's been planted. This forum never lets me down! 😁

My grandparents had two trees like that when I was a kid many years ago. Nobody ever named them, and I thought they were just a peculiar variety that was grown for looks. The apples on them were slightly different in flavor and color, but still very similar. The flavor was odd, but good. The fruit never got mellow.

Looking at the last picture it looks like there are several rootstock suckers that are taking over. They are the smaller, smoother, straighter stems growing up from the bottom. If you have 2 different types of fruit that would clinch it. Then you would have to decide which one stays and which one goes.

It can be hard to tell apples from cherries.
If in doubt try to cut one in half...round the equator
Cherries have one stone.
Malus or apple... large ones and tiny ones have 5 pips.

My grandmother had a tree who's fruit looked just like that. She said it was a sour cherry tree. She used to make jelly from it.
If the fruit has a pit it's cherry if it has several seeds, it's a crabapple.
