Hello!

I have moved to a different state and climate, where I can now grow lots of daylilies. I had just wanted to know which daylilies you folks in the daylilies forum liked best, so I can get some ideas. If you don't feel comfortable choosing, because you like so many, that's fine! You can post your top 3, 4, 5, etc.

After everyone's said which ones they like best, I will tally up which daylilies were mentioned the most and look at those. Of course I will also look at the other ones, but I want to see which ones you all like, and see if I like them too, so that I can get them.

Wow, I like your profile pic! What a handsome wolf! with Dave. You probably want to find daylilies that are hardy to your zone. There are daylilies that maybe beautiful but may not grow well or survive your cold climate. Even in my zone 6, I do have some that don't grow or increase well after even a moderate winter.

I think everyone wants to help you, but there are soooooo many different daylilies and styles of daylilies. When I got the hang of this site, I spent a lot of time on the alphabet threads trying to get an idea of what I liked and what I didn't.

And then I looked for people who lived in a similar climate to me and kind of studied what they posted.... or looked at their plant list, if they had one.

It's not a bad way to get started.

The other reality is that no matter what it tells you on the site you are buying from ( most dls are listed to zone 5), the sad truth is that there is definitely a divide between Northern and Southern daylilies. Make sure whoever you buy from is growing them outside ( not a greenhouse) in your climate. You need them to be field grown so you have more of a chance of plant survival. I've lost a lot of pretty and expensive plants that came from Florida originally. There are plenty of Evergreens that adapt well to the North, just let your local daylily growers sort that out for you.

If you weren't so far away I'd tell you to come over in July and pick a few!

Would it be best to have them in their own designated part of my garden? Or could I grow them with other plants? Because I was thinking of having them in sort of a flower combination with other plants.

I've got both. The daylilies don't object to other plants as long as they have room. Just don't plant invasive things with them, it's a hassle. ( I've been struggling with vinca and swamp iris this year). You don't want stuff that will wrap around their roots and get in their way or make them hard to divide. Oh, and watch out for black eyed susan, that stuff seeds everywhere and is a weeding nightmare.

I do both. I'm using my own seedlings as highlight plants more and more to find a place for them. But I also combine 6-10 different daylilies in groups where the colors look nice together like orange and yellow or purple and pink or whatever, and I've been making a game out of getting those groups to bloom as many days as possible throughout the summer. You know, some that start in June for me, and some that start in July, and some that cover parts of August and Sept.

And you'll have pay attention to when things bloom. For example, Sedum Autumn Joy looks nice in a row or mass planting in the fall, but then you need a fall blooming daylily like Olallie Mack to bloom with it. I have these old yellow irises that come back and rebloom at the same time as Sedum. You really feel like a gardener when you put a Spring plant, a plant known to be a summer plant, and a fall plant together and things align so they bloom together in September.

Daylilies look great with other plants, Since they are only at their best a few months of the year, it always look neat. When I get down to where Im over the whole daylily thing due to no energy left, Ill take my best of the best and do just that, put them in with the landscaping.

What Zoia said ... watch out for invasives. Yes, they may be ornamentals but could end up swamping your other plants. Of course, I'm also zone 6b so it may be worse here. For example, I've just been digging up and giving away hundreds and hundreds of grape hyacinths. There are sooo many I've planted and regretted but that's for another thread probably in another forum.

As to your original question, I would say you cannot go wrong with anything from Karol Emmerich. She's in Michigan so the zone may be similar to yours. Maybe look for dormant daylilies?

Find a display garden, visit during bloom and see what the daylilies look like growing in your area, in real life.

I just did a search for Display Gardens in SD and found two, plus one in Nebraska.

BIG, Sparkling flowers on strong scapes, from Big fans, and makes seeds reliably with multiple pollen donors. Great Plant!

All that will grow in our zone

I've been saying for years now that 'Parfait' is my favorite daylily. I love the trumpet shape, height (48"), and that it is a bicolor. Even though it does not rebloom for me, I still love it. And it is an oldie, so it is cheap.

You've got lots of healthy daylilies.

I am falling in love with the rebloomers. I am in a warmer zone than you and our first frost is a month late this year. I have 4 rebloomers and they are still blooming, at least until this coming Wednesday when we are forecast to have freezing weather. :c(
