I was eating some carrot slices today, when I found this in the bag!

I'd like to try and grow it. Does anyone have any tips on growing a plant from a carrot slice? Should I just put the whole slice in the dirt or do I need to cut it?

Never seen that, pretty cool!

It contains part of the 'top' of the carrot as well as root. The top is growing with energy and moisture from the slice.. not much there in the way of actual functional root parts. I don't know the best way to proceed .. and don't expect a long life.

I guess I would plant the slice in a very small pot of potting mix and put it in a bright windowsill. Good luck!
Plant it and they will come.

I agree with Sally. The slanted slice has just enough of the top to grow. You can grow a carrot from a carrot 'cap' so maybe it will work. I would plant as Sally suggested.

Please let us know how it works out.

I'll definitely post updates if it grows. I have it wrapped up in a damp towel now to prevent it from drying out and I'll be planting it in a little pot tomorrow.

I wonder if it'll grow roots out of the slice. That would be pretty cool

So I have a small update:

The leaves all wilted after just a day of being out of the bag in the fridge. I put it back in the bag for a while and it perked up again. I think, since it doesn't have roots, it's going to need to be kept really moist and the air was too dry.

I put it in a Tupperware container with some water, and I'm hoping this will allow it to grow roots. Then I'll plant it in a pot and see if it continues to grow.

Yup, it's back to looking nice and healthy since I put it in the water! I'm seeing some growth that might be a root (or a really fat stem). It's still really small but it definitely doesn't look like another leaf

I expect the roots to be very thin, and come off the thin sides, not the flat part. Leaves will only be from the same point they are now. Watch out for cloudiness or slimy water. Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers! Leaves will try to go up;, roots, down, or at least not up.
Plant it and they will come.

I'm not seeing any roots yet but the leaves are getting bigger! One sprout in particular is so tall it's about to start touching the lid of the Tupperware container! I may have to put it in a deeper container soon

The leaf is the energy factory for the plant. Since it is enclosed and moist, it needs leaf before it needs root Crossing Fingers! Thumbs up
Plant it and they will come.

This is the neatest thing ever! It'll be fun to watch.
I always hope to find a froggie in a bag of salad so that I can save its life. LOL.

Lol I haven't ever found a frog but I have found a few bugs in lettuce!

The leaf is touching the lid! I can't believe how fast it's growing.

It was growing really well and had new leaves, and then suddenly the leaves wilted and it started turning black. I think the carrot experiment has ended, because I've been trying to get it to perk back up but it's not looking great. I'll try to bring it back for a while longer but I think it's probably dead, sadly.

Aw
Don't be too sad. It isn't natural for it to be able to completely grow from what you had. Smiling But it is fun while it lasts, right?
Plant it and they will come.

One that really blew me away.. sometimes, a really really ripe tomato will have seeds Inside that have sprouted and have 2 tiny green leaves and a root. Blinking
Plant it and they will come.

Here it was at its tallest. The leaf got a bit bigger but it didn't get much taller than this. It was a pretty impressive little carrot sprout for a while!
