This year I'm keeping a slew of Colocasia pups growing over winter including several Mojito. This one sent up it's 3rd leaf which looks to either be reverting or a sport.
The first two leaves are normal, this is the newest leaf.
The petiole of the oldest leaf has normal spotting, the next oldest leaf has the dark red on part of the base, while this newest leaf has a completely red petiole.

Any idea of whats going on?

Possibly not getting enough light?

I'll move it upstairs to a sunny window and see what happens.

Im gunna say its just lack of stability in the genes...just a guess tho.

My fancier colocasia always get as green as possible when there isn't enough light. A window might not be enough. Any black colocasia in my experience will turn a dark green (sometimes not very dark at all). It makes no suprise that it occurs for this mojito too, which I do not have. My illustris does this, though.

Andrew, I'm noticing this with Black Coral, at least in the basement under grow lights. The thing is, this is the only one of 10 pots of Mojito doing this. The dark splotches are certainly lighter across the board but none are showing leaves like this or the red petiole. Hoping time will tell but waiting for next summer is aggravating.

Though I am no expert on any of these plants, I would assume that your plant is expressing its independence. In other words, I think your wonderful plant is expressing how different each leaf on each aroid really can be. Also there is the possibility that the hybrid version did not take well with this particular plant. Mojito is a hybrid, right? Also it may simply be missing the sun more than your other plants. I have had the same species of plants next to each other with one sick due to the same conditions the other thrived in. In fact that seems to be quite a common occurrence at least. Anyways, I would not give up on your plant looking the way it did before. Simply wait out the winter, & put the thing back where it wants to be this spring. Man am I glad I do not have a cold season here. Evan have you checked out my blog? I think you will like it.

Our cold winters have certain compensations, just not when trying to overwinter "tender" perennials. 'Mojito' is a sport of 'Midnight', per the patent "...is a naturally-occurring branch mutation of Colocasia esculenta `Midnight`, ..." which in turn is a branch mutation. I'd be delighted if it was either reverting or a sport, but...only time will tell. Yes I've been checking in on your blog. Good stories!
