Hi all, I started to grow my 8th months small avocado plant half of May. It was initially in water and then potted in soil in September when it already had the first 4 leaves. The soil and the plastic pot were chosen by an expert (more than me for sure ! ) Working in a garden/indoor plants shop. I definitely trusted him. With time other 3 leaves have grown and now seems another 3 are coming. It's been looking always super healthy considering I'm living in a studio flat on a basement. My window is wide and facing the main entrance of the basement in front of the street. My avocado has lived there since the beginning so it can catch Air and light . Just a couple of time I've asked people to look after it in their house and the last time in October it came back with all the leaves down .. D'Oh! Sad .. but it became healthy in a very few days with me.
My room especially now that It's winter can become quite dry. So I bought and hanging heater humidifier . Heater is far from the window though. I water it every time I notice I cannot imprint my finger in the soil. Since beginning of December I noticed that one of the two side of the seed started to turn dark brown , but with the same consistence of the other that looks really healthy. Part of the stem seems turning wooden from the base. However this week I noticed that 2 of the first leaves started to turn brown on the extremity. Is my avocado dying slowly because of weather or for some other reason , or this can happen? How can I prevent it to die ? What would you advice me? I'm attaching some photos done just this morning. Thank you in advance for your precious help! Looking forward for your replay! Thank You!

Overall, your avocado looks good. I think you are watering a little too much though. Let the soil dry an inch or so down before you water.

The 'seed' is actually the avocado tree's cotyledon - seed leaves. Their sole purpose is to feed the embryo until it grows roots and leaves to feed itself. After the nutrients in the cotyledon are all used up, they drop off the plant. Just one cotyledon is dying on your plant but, in photo #2, there appears to be a second stem. That might be why the second cotyledon is still green.

Thank you Daisyl !
To be honest I water the soil in that way cause I'm paranoid about the dryness of my room. Heater is centralized so It will on and off on its own. When I work my window is closed at least 13 hours so it's not humid enough for the avocado.
However , what should I do about the leaves turning brown ?

Thank You! again ! Lovey dubby

If I'm watering it too much , why the first leave is like this in the photo ? Another two have started as well to turn brown in the end..
What should I do ?

Thank you! Crossing Fingers! Thank You!

What's a heater humidifier?

In photo #2 there is a group of little white cones or blobs next to the green cotyledon. What are those?

I would not worry about the humidity, avocados are grown commercially in California in places where the humidity gets down into the teens. I think you are overwatering (a symptom is the leaves turning dry and brown). Wait until the soil is dry down to about 1 inch before watering again.

Hi Sumire,
Heater humidifier is an hanging pot where you can put some water and with the heater of the radiator the water evaporates in a way to reduce the dry air in a room.

The white cones are flowers fell from another plant that was next to it Smiling

So my avocado has put some other leaves ! But the very old one are turning brown and I don't know what to do.

Any advice ?

Thanks !

Your avocado looks great! I think those two leaves are simply dying because they are old.

Oooh thank you! You really reassured me ! When is it going to be the case to re-pot it in a bigger one ?

Now is a good time of year to replant the avocado, and it could use a larger pot. Here's how to do it:

-move it to a two gallon pot.
-use the same type/brand of dirt you used before.
-slide it out of the pot and try not to disturb the root ball. If dirt falls off it is okay, just don't break it up intentionally.
-water thoroughly after planting and resume your normal care schedule. It will take longer to need water after potting up because there is more soil that needs to dry out.
-don't fertilize until next year this time. (Most potting soil comes with fertilizer, and additional will just stress the tree.)
-next year when you fertilize, use it at half strength.

Let us know how it goes!

Hi all! So my avocado actually lost most of the dry leaves and put more new so I'm quite happy ! Didn't managed to repot it yet though. It made lots of small flys but I put and oil and water trap and seems better.

However I have a few questions:

1. I noticed on of the cotyledon has a green part. Am I supposed to cover it ? Is it a root or a new part of the small tree coming ? What should I do ?

2. I will leave for 20 days end of August and I'm worried my plants will die !
With the avocado I also have couple of succulents, an Aloe , a flytrap and some cactus I'm not so worry about.

They advised me a water system like so:

Do you think my plants will survive for 20 days like this, especially the Avocado?
How many drip for each plant would you advice and how big do you think it has to be the reservoir of water for 20 days ?

They're all indoor so window will be close.

3. I noticed some white mold ( initially I thought it was salt from the heavy water ) in the aloe and flytrap. Should I be worry it will kill the plants or spread to others ?
