MantisOH, you have some beautiful patches of daffodils. How many bulbs do you plant together? Not many of my daffodils increase like that.

Loretta, some multiply quite readily; others are slow to multiply. Still others diminish in number. I usually purchase in batches of 10- 25, though sometimes as few as 5.
Martha Stewart was probably originally purchased as 50, as was British Gamble. The others were all smaller lots.

They look great! I just have a couple beginning bloom but most are just coming up. How do you handle the dying foliage?

I deadhead the blooms and accept the dying foliage till later in May. Some are tied up, but most not touched. In some areas, annuals such as zinnias are grown (started in pots in early May) in a bed. Other areas are just lightly mulched. Some have perennials (such as peonies) coming up around them. Yes, the foliage can get ugly, but what provides such cheerfulness in early spring without one's having to worry about deer?

Very true. That is why I grow them too. I got over the foliage although it does last longer than the rest of the bulbs.

Crawgarden, love your clump of snowdrop. They look large. Do you know what variety it is? Does this variety increase/grow well for you?

Karen, March was cold in southern Pennsylvania? Your climate in general is milder, and I think your springs are usually more gradual (perhaps because of the ocean influence). We are northern part of 6a, and I have seen you post things that are less successful here.

I especially like the hyacinths with the whitish hellebore, which seems more tidy than many hellebores and more upfacing. Name?

I think the item named Tweety Bird is actually Jetfire. Tweety Bird does not have an orange cup and is taller.

Daffodils here got zapped in the last few days, but even with a low of 20, most have recovered quite well.

Hi Karen, the snowdrops you are referring to are Galanthus Elwesii, they do seem to be increasing, albeit slowly. I also have a small clump of Galanthus nivalis, which has also increased but very gradual.

Thanks Mantis and Rj! Mantis, the white hellebore is Frostkiss Mollly's White. It is a vigorous and prolific bloomer.

Wow, Mantis! Thank you so much for pointing out to me that the clump above is actually Jetfire and not Tweety Bird. I have no idea. I thought that they sent me the right bulbs but now after researching it on the web, I believe that you are right. I have been deceived for the last 5 years thinking that I have Tweety Bird when in fact they are Jetfire. I wonder if I can still complain about it. I got these bulbs from Van Engelen.

Are you ahead of bloom times in Minnesota? I like the carmine tulips.

Karen, I am surprised that Van Engelen would make a variety mistake. There are, of course, some lower-rated companies that often substitute or are careless about varieties being true to name.

Sentinel was barely opened when it got hit with adverse weather (like twenty degrees). Its stem strength leaves something to be desired.

It looks like Topolino to me. Blooming time here is about average; perhaps a bit late, but catching up quickly.

Thanks, that sounds correct, this is the first year I have got decent blooms out of them. Guess 1 out 5 years is not bad! They will have more light this year, took out a large ash tree, and I got a pen that was turned by my neighbor out of the tree!
