Hello Friends and Happy Spring!

My wife and I are in Pittsburgh, PA and we noticed we have an infestation of a "weed" throughout our yard this Spring. Does anyone know this weed and what we can do to get rid of it? The white head, on the plants, can let loose tiny white petals if disturbed or if the wind blows.

Here is a general photograph, with a maple leaf as a measure of size.

Many thanks for comments.

Is it possible to get a closer photo of the leaves and blooms? I can't see the plant clearly but I wonder if it might be a variety of Bittercress?

edited to add; hopefully someone will have advice on eradicating it from the lawn without killing grass and other plants.

Yes, Bitter Cress. It will be gone in a few weeks - its an annual and dies after going to seed. The best control is to mow down the flowers while its still blooming (before it sets seed). No seeds this year, no Bitter Cress next year.

Thank you very much Daisyl and Plantladylin for your insights. Indeed, after your suggestions, I googled Bitter Cress and it confirmed your information.
We had cut some of it out and I dug some of it our with a spade. It rained last night so much of the flowers were gone today. We'll ask questions earlier next time. :-)

Fond regards and Happy Gardening!

Additionally, you may want to consider applying a pre-emergent weed control like Preen because some seeds have probably already landed in that area. That stuff proliferates like crazy and can keep coming back year after year.

Thank you Calsurf73. Yes, we belief the horse has already left the barn. We pulled up as much as we could. We'll see how we did this Fall. Best wishes! Smiling
