John, Your Bromeliad looks to be a stolonifera type Neoregelia.
What is the leaf spread measurement across from leaf tip to leaf tip? What sun conditions was this Bromeliad growing in?
Sun conditions play a big role in the coloration.
Example:
Here is a look at N. 'Superball' That receives a few hours of filtered morning sun.

Same grouping of 'Superball' growing on the back side in shade conditions.

Here is a look at the stolon from where the new pups are produced.

I agree it looks to be Neoregelia fireball, slowly acclimate it to a more partial sun and it will color up. Careful though even though it is a sun lover, too much too fast can burn it, I learned the hard way. First photo is when I first mounted these cuttings to a piece of driftwood, it had been in pretty much total shade. The second is after moving it to a filtered sun, with some good morning sun, colored up nicely, but you can see some burn marks where I put it in too much sun at first, one day is all it took to burn those spots, I quickly moved it.

Scott, Sherri, thanks for the identification on the bromeliad. Scott, there are some new pups emerging and they look identical to the picture you posted. The original owner had it in shade so we will keep it under shade and slowly acclimate it to the sun to get some color. I have one other question- does this make a flower? thanks for all your help.

John, The Neoregelias flowering stay in the central cup.
Neoregelia 'Easter Egg' now provides a flower for show.
