A plant that has been raised in insufficient light, even total darkness. Becomes elongated while reaching for light. May also become pale in color due to lack of chlorophyll.

If you have photos of etoliated sempervivum, please post them here.

These have been apparently growing in low light conditions. I've since put them in a window sill until it gets warm enough to transplant them outside.

Semps will usually display etiolation when given too much water for the available light. I often see them in the big-box stores when well-meaning staff water too much.

I sure hope they will do better outdoors. I'm excited for warmer weather mostly so I can get my babies out there healthy again. I will definitely try only misting them here while they are indoors.
Thank You,

I was told on here that I could just take off the bottom leaves and plant it down a little deeper. I would love it the leaves started to turn back upward though? Hopefully someone will know the answer Confused

I have one that did this and I just removed all of the lower leaves to make it look like a trunk. I like having one unusual Semp with a trunk. It almost looks like a little tree.

I'll take a photo of mine later today. I moved it to a more sunny location today. If you were into miniature gardens, you could use these as little trees for them.

Pretty odd, isn't it? That semp is 'Baby Star', and it had a bunch of chicks stuck together very tightly in a clump. They were actually still on a stolon from the hen. As they grew they developed the trunk. It got top heavy and tipped over. I propped it up again, but then the tree just started to deteriorate. That was too bad. It looked pretty cool while it lasted though!

I came across a few semps today that weren't getting enough light, and had the turned down leaves. I just replanted them in better light, The bottom leaves usually follow the sun and go back to a normal position.

I think I smell smoke. Oh, it Connie coming up with more ideas. Connie how Blinking does your head hold all those ideas? Blinking

Actually, I was just kidding about the bonsai, though I'm not above trying something like that if just the right plant came along. I just don't think it would hold the form for very long. All of my other ideas are vegetating for the time being while I think about doing my taxes. Then there is the actual doing them to do. Oh did you know I am a procrastinator?
